New transfer tunnel: Hanover Central Station will be future-proof!
A lot is happening in the heart of Hanover: Deutsche Bahn has presented ambitious plans to make the main station fit for the future. With a new transfer tunnel and extensive modernization measures, the station should not only become faster and more comfortable, but also meet the increasing demands of rail commuters. Today, September 5, 2025, a concept was presented that could revolutionize accessibility for travelers.
The new tunnel that connects the Ernst-August-Galerie with the train station is one of the central measures. In the future, commuters will have the opportunity to use this tunnel to change trains. Stairs and elevators to the platforms are also being planned to make access easier. However, the city of Hanover rejected the idea of a large bridge over the tracks, which took the project in a different direction. This is part of the comprehensive renovation project at the main station, which is already in the planning phase and could probably begin in the early 2030s, as NDR reports.
Extensive modernizations at the train station
The entire project is estimated to cost around two billion euros. In addition to the new tunnel, plans include the modernization of all existing platforms and the construction of a new platform. In addition, a new central platform with two additional tracks will be built on the north side of the station. The tracks in front of the station will also be re-laid to make room for more trains, which will significantly increase the quality of operation and punctuality at the main station. Further measures, such as the renewal of five track bridges and the renovation of 52 other bridges, are also on the list, according to Hannover.de.
A central aspect of the project is the creation of a barrier-free environment. The installation of a new tactile guidance system for blind and visually impaired people as well as additional passenger information are intended to increase comfort. One of the main goals is to improve the flow of travel on the busy platform on tracks 1 and 2, in particular by adding an additional staircase.
Part of the Deutschlandtakt concept
The entire renovation at the main station is part of the larger “Deutschlandtakt” concept, which aims to improve connections between the country's major cities. Train services are to be further optimized with 30-minute intervals between the cities. BMV emphasizes that a total of more than 3,000 facilities in Germany are to be modernized in order to increase the attractiveness and accessibility of public transport.
The city of Hanover has already presented the plans to residents and the renovation will not only improve the infrastructure, but also redesign the station forecourt to create a more inviting entrance. The aim is to create a harmonious overall image that is equally appealing to both travelers and residents.
With this comprehensive renovation project at Hanover Central Station, an exciting time lies ahead - certainly not just for rail commuters, but for the entire city. The planned investments promise to strengthen Hanover as a transport hub while at the same time ensuring a more pleasant travel experience.
