Renovation work paralyzes level crossings in Wedemark – diversions necessary!

Today, July 21, 2025, some developments occurred on the railway line between Bennemühlen and Schwarmstedt that are important for residents and commuters. Unfortunately, the renovation work on this important connection is causing restrictions that are noticeable in the municipality of Wedemark. Reliable information about the current situation is available from the city of Hanover, which emphasizes that closures are in force at several level crossings. Particularly affected are Celler Weg, which is completely closed, as well as the crossing on Hannoversche Straße, which can only be temporarily opened after a cleaning machine has passed through, probably in 3 to 4 hours.

It is advisable for commuters and road users to take a look at the other level crossings: The Dickweg is temporarily open, but under the supervision of a security guard, while the crossings at the Dorfkrug and the pedestrian station are currently closed. However, Brinkhansstrasse also offers a temporary opening, secured by railway employees.

Level crossings in Lindwedel: New regulations

Parallel to this renovation work, the transport authority introduced a groundbreaking regulation for the level crossings in Lindwedel on the initiative of joint municipal mayor Björn Gehrs and Lindwedel mayor Artur Minke. This change, which states that the two crossings “Hannoversche Straße” and “Dickeweg” may not be closed at the same time, could prevent kilometers of detours and an isolated situation for the citizens of Lindwedel. Such a wise decision takes pressure off the situation and protects residents from the disadvantages of multiple closures.

Those responsible agree that this change was made possible not only through the efforts of the community, but also through cooperation with the responsible authorities, the construction company and the railway. A big thank you goes to everyone who has supported this important cause.

Security and modernization

However, the problem of level crossings does not only affect residents in Schwarmstedt and Lindwedel. Across the country, these crossings are a constant source of tension in traffic, causing stress and potentially dangerous. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is in favor of a sustainable solution by providing around 75 million euros annually to replace level crossings with flyover structures. In the past, the number of level crossings in Germany has already been reduced from 28,336 in 2005 to 22,545 in 2020.

These modernization efforts show that there is a clear goal: to increase the safety of road users and improve the quality of life of residents. Simplified approval processes and financial incentives help communities efficiently solve existing problems and systematically avoid new transitions.

In view of the ongoing work and new regulations, the municipality is asked to understand any inconveniences and recommends using the signposted diversions in order to avoid traffic bottlenecks.

The situation remains exciting and requires a good hand from everyone involved in order to master the challenges in the best possible way. Further information and updates can be found on the websites of Hannover.de and Schwarmstedt.de. In the future too BMV.de provide important information to improve traffic safety at level crossings.
