Hot days in Lower Saxony: up to 40 degrees and thunderstorms approaching!

Today, June 19, 2025, the weather in Lower Saxony is showing a clear change. Forecasts for this June were initially rather mixed and offered little of the sunny summer that many were hoping for. But weather expert Dominik Jung from wetter.net predicts an impending heat wave. Temperatures are expected to rise to up to 27 degrees by June 21st, with values beyond 30 degrees expected on the 22nd. This warm air is due to a powerful surge of hot air masses from Africa moving over Europe.

A look at the coming days reveals that the heat will not only last for a short time. According to the forecasts, there is no cooling in sight for the next few weeks, quite the opposite! Two large highs over Europe are contributing to the hot summer temperatures. New heat waves have even been announced from the west on June 25th and 26th, with temperatures of 22 degrees already being measured at an altitude of 1,500 meters. This could result in what feels like 30 to 35 degrees on the floor. With all the heat, however, the precipitation falls by the wayside; Only isolated rain signals are possible on June 26th. Temperatures are even expected to peak at up to 40 degrees in early July! The forecasts are preliminary, but based on current trends, a heat wave is expected, which underpins the reported rising temperatures in Lower Saxony.

Heat and thunderstorms approaching

But the weather has even more to offer. In addition to the heat, thunderstorms are also in the forecast. Weather experts report that heat and thunderstorms will go hand in hand in Lower Saxony. A high pressure area will shape the weather situation in the north. Storms are expected on Wednesday night, followed by a Wednesday with heavy cloud cover and showers. The temperatures then drop to 24 to 28 degrees.

Looking back at the weather history of the year, August promised a second hot spell, but so far the coolness remains predominant. In the past, heavy rain has led to flooded cellars and even a landslide in the Göttingen district. However, the forecast states that no more heavy rain is expected in the coming days. Another bright spot: In Bremen we expect up to 25 degrees on Friday and even 30 degrees on Sunday. The trend shows that it is constantly getting warmer there, which promises to peak temperatures.

Health consequences of the heat

As temperatures rise, so do the health risks. As the Federal Environment Agency states, a “hot day” is defined as a day with 30 °C or more. High temperatures not only make the body sweat, but can also negatively impact air quality by leading to the formation of ground-level ozone. This circumstance can worsen existing respiratory diseases and trigger allergic reactions.

In Germany we recorded an average of 12.5 hot days last year. This number could increase further in the coming years. Climate models not only show a trend towards longer heat periods, but also an increasing number of hot days. This is important to keep an eye on, because the numbers were particularly high in 2003, 2015 and 2018 with 18 to 20 hot days.

The coming weeks in Lower Saxony promise to be warm and changeable. It's up to the residents whether they want to visit one of the many beautiful beaches or a shady park to cool off. In any case, it remains to be seen how the weather situation will develop.
