Pair of traffic lights in Hildesheim: Court rejects lawsuit as inadmissible!
In Hildesheim, a dispute over same-sex traffic light couples is causing a stir. As the Borken newspaper Reportedly, a man from the city has filed a lawsuit against these new traffic light motifs, but the Hanover Administrative Court recently rejected the lawsuit as inadmissible. On September 24, 2025, the court heard the case, which is in the light of social changes.
Presiding judge Arne Gonschior stated that the plaintiff could not prove any violation of his rights. This, a councilor from Hildesheim, describes himself as conservative and sees himself restricted in his identity and upbringing of his children by the traffic light men. He had argued that the traffic lights would affect his parental rights and sexual orientation. However, Gonschior noted that the traffic light signs simply reflect social reality and that there is no unequal treatment because the symmetrical couples depict both men and women NDR supplemented.
The story of the traffic light couples
The same-sex traffic light pairs in Hildesheim are not a blanket experiment, but rather result from a council decision from June 2023. Since mid-June, a total of 14 traffic lights have shown the new motifs when they are “green”. This conversion was discussed controversially by part of the council, and there were also tumultuous scenes like this Lower Saxony State Chancellery reported. The plaintiff is not only an affected citizen, but also active in his role as a councilor and has announced that he will take action against the council decision.
Similar traffic lights have been in use for some time in other cities in Lower Saxony, such as Hanover and Braunschweig. This symbolism is interpreted as a step towards greater acceptance and visibility for the LGBTQ+ community and is part of a larger social change that continues to be discussed at a legal level.
An outlook on further legal steps
The plaintiff has the opportunity to appeal to the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court in Lüneburg. However, the judge was optimistic and hopes for legal peace. It remains to be seen whether the plaintiff will actually take legal action. What is certain is that the discussion about diversity and equality in society is gaining momentum, and same-sex traffic light couples may soon no longer just be part of urban life in Hildesheim, but in many other cities.
The question remains as to how this important social dialogue will develop further. At a time when equality is a key issue for many, the outcome of this lawsuit could have far-reaching implications.
