Heat wave hits Lower Saxony: storm warning for the weekend!
On June 14, 2025, a change in the weather will take place in Lower Saxony, bringing with it both summer warmth and violent storms. According to the District newspaper This weekend the summer high Xara meets the cold front Xhevat. The temperature readings climb to a mild 25 to 30 degrees on Friday, before even rising to a tropical 29 to 33 degrees on Saturday. From 11 a.m. the German Weather Service (DWD) will issue official heat warnings, especially for the districts of Emsland, Grafschaft Bentheim, Vechta and Osnabrück.
The coming days require a bit of care from everyone. In particular, the health risks associated with the heat should not be underestimated. Notes from the Heatwarnings.de remind us that heat stress poses a serious health risk. Drinking enough water, avoiding alcohol and intense sunlight, and wearing light-colored clothing are essential recommendations to beat the heat.
Storms approaching
But the heat is only one side of the coin. On Saturday evening, Tief Xhevat will bring thunderstorms, which will initially move over the Emsland and the Teutoburg Forest. During the evening the storm will spread northeastwards and heavy rain and gusts of up to 55 km/h are expected. At night the temperatures drop to a mild 19 to 16 degrees, with showers and thunderstorms expected again in western Lower Saxony.
If you get up early on Sunday, you will find yourself in humid but changeable weather conditions. While the morning is characterized by showers and thunderstorms, temperatures rise again to 23 to 26 degrees. As the week progresses the weather should calm down and a mix of sun and clouds will bring with it isolated showers.
Health risks from extreme heat
The effects of heat cannot be ignored. The Federal Environment Agency explains that “hot days” are defined as those with temperatures above 30°C. Older people and people with previous illnesses are particularly at risk. Statistics show that in the hot summers of recent years, such as 2018 and 2019, around 15,600 people in Germany died from heat-related complications. An increase in heat-related complaints is expected, particularly in urban areas where the heat island effect is causing temperatures to rise further.
The combination of hot days and tropical nights not only represents a climatic challenge, but also a significant health risk. According to forecasts, with every degree increase in temperature, heat-related mortality could increase by 1 to 6 percent. Keeping a close eye on the weather conditions and your own health is not only advisable, but necessary.
