Magical Christmas market: Travel to the 16th century in Lüneburg!
An impressive spectacle in the romantic old town of Lüneburg awaits visitors on the first weekend in December. On December 6th and 7th, the traditional Christmas market at St. Michael's Church opens its doors and takes young and old alike back to the 16th century. How Lüneburg Current reports, the market will take place on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. With a historical ambience, illuminated by torchlight and candlelight, a special, contemplative atmosphere is created, without any modern distractions.
Around 60 stalls await market visitors with a wide range of products that can be traced back to the 16th century. From handmade woven goods and nostalgic toys to delicate jewelry and unique pottery, no wish is left unfulfilled. New items this year are the “Blacksmith Miracle” and a stall with brick decorations, which are sure to pique the interest of guests.
An unforgettable experience
A special highlight are the numerous participants who contribute to the overall picture with historical clothing. Over the past 30 years, the Christmas market has become a fixture in the region and attracts numerous visitors every year. City guards ensure that market peace is maintained and underline the historical flair. Visitors can look forward to refined dishes, including the popular Renaissance bratwurst and vegetarian patties known as “Heydelinge,” which also cater to vegetarian and vegan cuisine.
Small concerts will take place in St. Michael's Church during the event. On Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Advent and Christmas carols will be played and will further underline the church atmosphere. These little musical interludes invite you to linger and round off the experience at the market.
A contribution to monument protection
Part of the proceeds from the stands and admission donations go towards the restoration of a Renaissance ceiling painting that was found in the former Wist Am Sande supermarket. This impressive painting from 1563 shows female allegories and is an important part of Lüneburg's history. Therefore, the city guards collect donations for monument protection in Lüneburg at the entrance to the event.
The atmosphere that the Christmas market exudes leaves the hustle and bustle of today behind and invites you to enjoy the magic that is in the air. Those planning to visit the market are advised to come on foot as parking is limited. Further information about the historic Christmas market can be found on the website and available on Facebook.
