Scharnebeck starts heat transition: climate protection through new heat planning!

In the Sartgemeinde Scharnebeck, a lot is happening in terms of heat supply. What could be more obvious than starting with it? The municipality has now started the municipal heat planning (KWP) project, an initiative that should clearly set the course for a sustainable future. On June 26, 2025, the first specialist player workshop took place, which underlines how serious the velvet community is with heat planning. This planning is not only voluntary, but also a necessary step towards planning security, as mayor Laars Gerstenkorn emphasizes. Finally, all citizens in the region should be given a transparent overview of the upcoming developments.

The legal foundations for heat planning were created by a law that came into force on January 1, 2024. The aim of this law is to bring heat supply in Germany to a climate -friendly rail and to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. Because over 50 % of the final energy consumption in Germany is due to heating heat, a fact that must be tackled urgently sustainably, whereby the focus is on the dependence on gas and oil in particular [bmwsb.bund.de] (https://www.bmwsb.bund.de/de/stadtkl.

funding from the BUND

The velvet community also did not allow itself to be ragged and successfully applied for a promotion of 90 % via the "national climate protection initiative". It will therefore have to raise an average four -digit amount as an own contribution for the planning. This funding should not only help to keep the costs under control, but of course also to achieve the ambitious goals of the heat transition, in which fossil energies should be a thing of the past. The planned technologies promise exciting perspectives: photovoltaic systems, solar thermal energy, heat pumps, biomass heating and customary storage technologies are on the list.

The focus of the KWP is to show potential and further reduce the energy dependencies in Scharnebeck. The workshop brought together representatives of various interest groups, including local heating builders and employees of the district of Lüneburg. Together they discussed the challenges and opportunities that the heat supply in the community brings. In the end, realistic suggestions for future heat supply were developed.

next steps and citizen participation

And it continues: The company Enercity AG and IP Syscon GmbH take over the planning work for the first time. In addition, the district of Lüneburg has already provided valuable data through its climate portal that are available to the actors. The next big stage is the report of the planning offices, which will be presented on September 17th in the velvet community council. In order to inform the residents at an early stage, a citizens' information event is planned in the Scharnebeck domain on October 7 at 7:00 p.m.

But that doesn't end here. In autumn, a second meeting of the experts is scheduled to discuss the first results. For everyone who is interested in these topics, the publication of the final results of the KWP in the first quarter of 2026. Until then, the velvet community remains challenged and remains on track with the legally prescribed catalog to develop and concretize the first plans for future heat supply in Germany.

The Scharnebecker not only perceives their local responsibility with the start of their municipal heat planning, but also contribute to the nationwide energy transition. It remains exciting how these progress will develop in the coming months!
