Dispute in Buxtehude escalates: man critically injured with knife!

In Buxtehude, in the Stade district, a dramatic incident occurred on July 10, 2025, which once again brings the issue of knife attacks in Germany onto the agenda. During a dispute between two groups near the district court, several people became violent, with a 29-year-old man from Würzburg being seriously injured by knife wounds. The incident, which happened at around 8pm that evening, escalated and left the victim, who collapsed after a few meters, with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the Elbe Hospital and operated on; His condition is now stable and his life is no longer in danger, as NDR reports.

The investigation is in full swing. After the argument escalated, a 17-year-old suspect was able to report to the police that same evening, while an 18-year-old was arrested in his apartment on Thursday. Both young people were initially taken into police custody, but were released back into the care of their parents due to the lack of a risk of escape. The two are being investigated for attempted murder and the police are looking for witnesses to the incident. Anyone interested can submit their information to the Buxtehuder police on 04161-647115, as Presseportal reported.

Knife attacks in focus

The incident in Buxtehude is unfortunately not an isolated case in Germany. The increase in knife attacks is worrying: 8,951 such attacks were recorded in 2022, compared to 8,160 in 2021. According to estimates, there were a total of 13,844 knife attacks in 2023, which also include robbery crimes. In this context, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is planning measures to restrict the use of knives in public spaces. Among other things, knives with a blade length of over 6 cm should no longer be allowed to be carried in public, with exceptions being made for household knives after purchase. Dangerous switchblades should be banned completely, and municipalities are recommended to introduce more weapon ban zones, as ZDF today informs.

The reasons for the increasing violence with knives are diverse. Criminologist Dirk Baier sees social inequality and rising costs of living as a breeding ground for violence. He also reports that up to a third of young males say they occasionally carry a knife. This is an alarming signal for society, which should urgently look for solutions. Some of the prevention proposals include tighter controls on knife distribution channels and the implementation of programs in schools that teach young people basic interpersonal skills, such as empathy and conflict resolution.
