Popular cycling in Munster: Discover the nature behind the fence!

On Sunday, July 13, 2025, the popular cycling event at the military training areas in Munster in the Heidekreis district invites you to a unique bike tour. This event is organized by the city of Munster, Munster Tourism and the Bundeswehr and offers participants the opportunity to experience the untouched nature of the heath and forest areas up close. Access to these scenic areas, which are normally closed to civilians 364 days a year, is open for the occasion.

Last year the number of participants reached an impressive 2,500, a new record for the event. This year the exact number of participants remains unclear, but preparations are in full swing. The starting point is at the parking lot directly from the Munster town sign. Maps are also distributed there and visitors will find water connections, toilets and food and information stands. Individual starts are possible from 9 a.m. and no pre-registration is required. However, it is important to adhere to safety regulations and not to leave the designated routes to ensure a safe experience.

Insights behind the fence

As Lieutenant Colonel Markus Ruhland emphasizes, popular cycling not only offers the opportunity for sporting activity, but also an exciting insight behind the fence of the military training areas. He explains that the event focuses less on military aspects and more on the beauty of nature. A lot of emphasis is also placed on safety; Around 30 soldiers will support the event to ensure that it runs smoothly.

Particularly noteworthy is the participation of Ulf-Marcus Grube, the mayor of Munster, who is starting his own “mayor tour” this year. Wine queen Michelle I. will also be taking part in the 25-kilometer tour, which includes a break in Lopau with wine and pretzels. For real sports fanatics, there are a total of eight different bike tours, ranging from 25 to 112 kilometers.

Supply and security

The safety of cyclists is our top priority. Water stations and breakdown services are set up along the routes to offer participants help at any time. Toilets and an information point are also available at the start. The local bike rental shops are particularly suitable for those who do not have their own bikes, including “bike & sport Sandau” and the “Fahrradhaus Drewes”. However, you must pre-register for the loan by the day before.

In addition to the healthy excursion through nature, an ADFC-guided tour is also offered, which starts at 10 a.m. and covers a distance of around 50 kilometers. Little guests and hobby cyclists are also taken care of: participants on the shorter routes are also warmly invited to explore the magical surroundings.

Popular cycling in Munster is not only a sporting challenge, but also a celebration for nature lovers and a unique insight into a landscape that is otherwise not very accessible. The effort that the organizers and supporters put into shows that a good hand for such events is very popular in northern Germany.
