Borkum celebrates Klaasohm: Tradition without violence brings joy!
On December 5th and 6th, Borkum celebrated the traditional Klaasohm festival, an event that is of great importance for the islanders. Six young men dressed as Klaasohms paraded through the streets and, despite the tense circumstances, the mood was positive and full of anticipation, as if Christmas was just around the corner. Police reported no incidents, which is a stark departure from last year's events, when the tradition was criticized for violent acts. Avoiding bodily harm and assault was a central concern of the organizers and participants. [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/niedersachsen/oldenburg_ostfriesland/borkum- Feiert-traditionelles-klaasohm-ohne-schlaege,klaasohm-104.html) is keeping a close eye on the details this year.
The festival began on Friday evening with the official pick-up of the Klaasohm candidates at 5 p.m. There was a ritual battle between the various Klaasohm groups, followed by a parade through the streets, bars and private houses. The celebrations ended with a spectacular jump from the advertising column. This festive tradition has been held by the Borkum Boys' Association for 195 years, but its origins are obscure.
Changes in the festival schedule
Particularly important this year was the decision to ban the beating of women with cow horns, which was often a custom in the past. This measure was taken after critical reporting last year and ensured that the festival spirit would no longer be marred by violence. Police protection was still necessary: there were fewer police officers on duty during the celebrations this year, but volunteer stewards ensured security. Deputy Mayor Melanie Helms and Mayor Jürgen Akkermann reported threats that had been received in advance, which made the security concept necessary. Another sign of these efforts was a telephone number set up specifically for women in dangerous situations.
An identity-forming event
Despite the necessary changes, Klaasohm remains an identity-forming event for the islanders. Traditional customs that promote a sense of community and identity are very popular. The public prosecutor's office in Aurich has closed the case of 25 reports from the previous year, which may indicate increased awareness of violence against women. Counseling centers are therefore expecting an increase in inquiries, which shows that social pressure is leading to positive changes. The festive season in Borkum not only offers entertainment, but is also a reflection of the ongoing developments in society.
