Experimenting and researching: Ahoy MINT Festival in Oldenburg!

After the successful concept of recent years, Oldenburg once again invites you to the exciting Ahoy MINT Festival on Schlossplatz on Friday, September 19, 2025. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can expect a program that will make both children and their families curious about the world of science and technology. Under the motto “Experiment, program, tinker and try out” there are over 40 hands-on activities and exciting lectures.

The festival is not only a platform for creative experimentation, but also a place to explore topics such as robotics, 3D printing, climate research and even shipping. Here, little explorers can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the Wadden Sea and learn more about climate and marine research. The goal is clear: to arouse curiosity about MINT topics and to make the wealth of extracurricular learning opportunities visible.

A highlight for young talents

A special highlight of the festival is the MINT Olympiad, in which students from all over Lower Saxony will take part. In this competition, young researchers can solve practical tasks at various stations in small teams. This not only offers an exciting challenge, but also the opportunity to show team spirit and creativity.

Admission to the Ahoi MINT Festival is free and registration is not required. The organizers are convinced that this is an opportunity that parents and children should take advantage of to immerse themselves in the world of science and learn a lot of new things.

Pioneering studies

In the run-up to the festival, the study “What Makes Families Tick” led by Julia Hiniborch and Prof. Dr. Michael Komorek from the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg provided valuable insights into families' experiences with extracurricular MINT opportunities. The research found that different socioeconomic backgrounds greatly influence families' wants and needs. The aim of this study is to better tailor both existing and new MINT education offerings to the needs of families, which is to be achieved through targeted adjustments.

The decline in students in technical and scientific subjects is another issue that is attracting greater attention, according to the Ministry of Science. Innovative initiatives such as the Ahoi MINT Festival are therefore essential in order to introduce children to the diversity and importance of scientific careers at an early stage.

Together with media partner NDR Lower Saxony, the festival will help to further promote the importance of MINT topics in society and honor teachers for their special achievements in the field of natural sciences - just as Nobel Prize winner Klaus von Klitzing does every year.

For anyone who is curious and willing to experiment, September 19th is a day that should not be missed. The city of Oldenburg warmly invites you to embark on an exciting journey of discovery into the world of MINT subjects!
