On Tuesday, June 18, 2025, there was a tragic accident on Beckstedter Straße in Colnrade in which a 69-year-old motorcyclist from Twistringen lost his life. The man crossed into the oncoming lane in a right-hand bend and collided head-on with a car, whose driver, a 59-year-old from Twistringer, fortunately remained uninjured. The tragedy occurred so abruptly that the motorcyclist died at the scene of the accident. The material damage was estimated at around 20,000 euros. The road had to be closed until 7:30 p.m. while the Delmenhorst police were on site with an ambulance, emergency doctor and a rescue helicopter to take the necessary measures. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear and investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.

This sad event sheds light on the general traffic situation in Germany. According to current statistics from Destatis, traffic accidents are still a big issue. In 2023, 2,839 people died in road traffic, and the forecast for 2024 is an estimated 2,830 fatalities. Motorcyclists in particular are at higher risk, with road traffic accident statistics providing important safety data and forming the basis for legislative action.

The accident statistics at a glance

There were some positive developments compared to previous years. The lowest number of traffic fatalities was reached in 2021 at 2,562, and there also appears to be a slight decrease in traffic fatalities in 2024, as BG Verkehr expects. Nevertheless, the number of 2.1 million road traffic accidents between January and October 2024 remains largely stable compared to the same period last year.

The detailed investigation of the causes of accidents, those involved and the type of vehicles is crucial for improving road safety. This data leads to targeted measures in the areas of road construction, traffic education and vehicle technology, all aimed at minimizing the dangers in road traffic.

While we are currently grieving the loss of a life, one can only hope that such tragic accidents can be avoided in the future through increased attention to road safety. It is important to raise awareness of the dangers in road traffic and to use appropriate preventative measures to save lives and ensure safety.
