After CSD attack: State security takes measures against minors!

On June 19, 2025, after Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Emden, an unfortunate incident occurred that upset the local LGBTQ+ community. After two men were attacked, state security began investigating three minors. This decision is not unusual when it comes to crimes in connection with political events, as NDR reports.

The attack occurred on Saturday evening after the parade, when a 31-year-old man from Hamburg and his 29-year-old partner from Wuppertal were victims of violence. Both belong to the “Puppy” scene and were apparently filmed. A video shows the brutal scenes in which the men are beaten and kicked. What was particularly frightening was that one of the men was wearing a leather dog mask, which made the attack even more disturbing, as nwzonline describes.

The role of the police and the community

The police were able to identify the suspected young people by name on Wednesday. Although the suspects' ages have not been made public, it is clear that, according to investigations, they are involved in grievous bodily harm. A kick that can be seen in the video could be decisive for the seriousness of the allegations. The CSD organization team took care of the two injured people, and fortunately they are doing well again.

The CSD organizers have emphasized that the community is “shocked, sad and afraid”. They see the need for a strict security concept for future events, which this year attracted a record audience with around 1,600 participants.

A sad development in Germany

The violent incidents involving the CSD in Emden are not the first. According to reports from the Lesbian and Gay Association of Germany (LSVD), violence against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity occurs every day in Germany. In 2023, 1,499 crimes were recorded, representing an alarming 49% increase compared to the previous year. These crimes include 288 violent crimes and 449 insults, as documented by LSVD.

Against this background, it is important that the police improve the documentation of anti-queer crimes and promote public awareness of the issue. Only through comprehensive information and the establishment of an independent commission of experts can the increasing hate crime be effectively countered.

More CSD events are scheduled to take place in other cities in the coming weeks, and the organizations involved hope that such incidents can be prevented. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what findings will emerge from the ongoing investigations.
