Baby chimpanzee euthanized in Bremerhaven Zoo – Peta criticizes brutally!
The Zoo by the Sea in Bremerhaven recently announced a sad event: a baby chimpanzee had to be euthanized a few days after birth. The cub, which may have been struggling with the health consequences of its birth, was not accepted by its mother. In addition, it showed low chances of survival early on, which made the decision to euthanize it essential. This reports NDR.
The autopsy revealed that the baby chimpanzee suffered from a systemic bacterial infection and had amniotic fluid in the lungs. Such health problems are often the reason why animals cannot receive reliable care from their mother. According to the zoo, the young animal would have had little chance of survival regardless of how it was raised. The mother, who suffered a circulatory collapse after the birth, was also able to stabilize herself, but showed no interest in her offspring. There was no way to support the baby with another source of milk. Attempts to bottle feed it failed as the young animal showed no sucking or swallowing reflex ( n-tv ).
Criticism and understanding
The decision to euthanize was met with strong criticism, particularly from the animal protection organization Peta. They sharply criticized the killing of the baby chimpanzee and doubted the necessity of this measure. However, the zoo emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the animal owners to always take the animals' quality of life into account. An older chimpanzee named “Toto” died unexpectedly but had previously appeared healthy. This loss has also emotionally affected the zoo's caretakers ( NDR ).
The importance of animal welfare is also underlined by the statement from the Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ), which points out that responsible animal husbandry requires passion and constant science. Animal keepers know each animal and do everything they can to monitor their health and well-being on a daily basis ( VdZ ). The zoological facilities are regularly inspected by authorities and the keeping conditions are based on the latest scientific findings.
Overall, this is a sad example of how sensitively the animals in the zoo have to be kept and the challenges that animal care brings with it. Both staff and visitors may feel this loss in different ways, but all parties agree: the animals' quality of life remains the top priority.
