Double tragedy in Osnabrück: ex-partner shot, perpetrator dead!
Yesterday a tragic crime occurred in Osnabrück that left the entire city in a state of shock. Shots were fired on Windhorststrasse on Monday afternoon: a 52-year-old man shot his 50-year-old ex-partner before losing his own life. The woman died from her serious injuries at the scene, while the perpetrator was taken to a clinic, where he died a short time later. Both leave behind three children who are now left without parental support. This is a hard blow for the family and the social community. As OSRadio reports, the two no longer lived together, which makes the circumstances of the crime seem even more tragic.
But this incident is not the only focus. Just recently, on Thursday evening, a 50-year-old woman in the Kalkhügel district of Osnabrück was allegedly stabbed to death in her apartment by her ex-partner. Sources say the two have a 17-year-old daughter who was present at the time of the crime. A neighbor had previously reported domestic violence. The injured woman was taken to hospital in an ambulance, where she died despite all efforts. The suspected instrument, a knife, was seized on site. Here too, the motive remains unclear, while the daughter was cared for by an emergency pastor. This case is covered by NDR.
A worrying development
An alarming trend can be seen in the current statistics on crimes against women in Germany. According to the latest data from the Federal Criminal Police Office, around 938 women and girls became victims of homicide in 2023, representing an increase of 1.0% compared to the previous year. In the vast majority of cases, the perpetrators were in relationships with the victims; Almost 81 percent of these homicides were in a family context. This makes it clear that many of these tragic cases result from a direct connection to existing relationships. The BKA stated this in a press release in which the growing number of such crimes is discussed.
These cases highlighted - both the tragic femicide on Windhorststrasse and the stabbing incident in Kalkhügel - are a dark reminder that domestic violence is still a serious problem in our society. Women's shelter lines and support offers for those affected are more important than ever. Migrants, single people and young mothers are particularly vulnerable to such acts of violence. At this point we would like to refer to the “Violence against Women” helpline: those affected can receive help anonymously and around the clock at 116 016.
Clarifying and preventive action in society is urgently required. This week's sad events are not just isolated incidents, but part of a larger problem that cannot be ignored.
