Drug scandal on Servatii Square: Citizens fear for their safety!
Things are buzzing in Münster – and not just in culinary terms! A large event with 18 stands will take place at the castle from June 13th to 15th, offering international delicacies and refreshing drinks. A festival for all those with a sweet tooth in the city! While the city is happy to stick to the right addresses, there are also concerns that cannot be ignored.
Recently, on June 12th, the police in Münster uncovered dirty businesses during targeted checks: Twelve people suspected of drug trafficking were the focus of the investigators. Dangerous narcotics such as cocaine and amphetamine were seized and a 23-year-old now has to stand trial.
Problems at Servatii Square
But the drug problem doesn't stop there. Complaints are particularly increasing at Servatii Square. Anyone who travels there is often met with a picture of disorder: fights, insults and an excess of rubbish have led to many citizens avoiding the place. Nearby businesses complain of repeated property damage and threats. A business owner, Gerwing, has already sent an incendiary letter to the council factions demanding more decisive action. Despite police presence, incidents continue, and one incident in which a man returned with a knife shows the precarious situation. It remains to be seen how the city administration and the police will react.
The police deny the allegations that a consistent approach is politically undesirable and emphasize that ongoing investigations at Servatii Square are continuing. However, the situation is a cause for concern as the problems do not appear to be easily resolved.
Drug markets in North Rhine-Westphalia
Across the board, the LKA NRW reports worrying figures on drug crime in Münster and beyond. The quantities of drugs seized, particularly cocaine, are taking on worrying proportions. Highly pure substances and stable prices show that drugs are very popular in the region. North Rhine-Westphalia has become an important transit point for drug shipments, with a significant proportion of drug replenishments entering the country via the Netherlands. The increasing spread of drug trafficking via the Internet and Darknet also contributes to the problem, as drugs often arrive directly to the buyer's home by post.
Amid these challenges, Head of Public Order Wolfgang Heuer assures that the municipal public order service is planning measures to improve the situation at Servatii Square, possibly even by removing benches to improve the quality of stay.
As if that weren't enough, the city is facing further challenges - election workers are needed for the local elections on September 14th, more than 2,500 volunteers are needed. A further look at the numerous projects in Münster, including the new bike park and the challenges of disaster control, shows that the city perhaps does not need to shy away from problems, but should work on solutions.
Although the culinary delights at the castle are tempting, it remains to be seen whether Münster can still overcome the challenges of drug crime and public safety from the city. The coming days will certainly be exciting.
