Osnabrück inspires at CITY CYCLING 2025: records and charity spirit!
The city of Osnabrück is proud of its impressive achievements at CITY CYCLING 2025. On July 9, 2025, several records were set, which not only motivate the region's cyclists, but also support an important charity campaign. This year, 224 teams took part, an increase of 41 groups compared to last year. The total of 3,963 participants cycled 745,179 kilometers, an impressive increase of 81,235 kilometers compared to 2023, where the cyclists covered 663,944 kilometers. These numbers make it clear: cycling is booming in Osnabrück.
The active participation of the political representatives is particularly pleasing: 26 council members took part and covered an average of 26.71 kilometers. This means that Osnabrück leads this category among municipalities with 100,000 to 499,999 inhabitants and holds the title of “Most Radical Local Parliament”. The best cyclists among the schools deserve praise: The school foundation team was at the top with 305 participants and 56,451 kilometers cycled, followed by the Graf-Stauffenberg-Gymnasium with 32,897 kilometers and the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences with 29,920 kilometers.
Do good together
CITY CYCLING 2025 was organized not only as a sporting challenge, but also as a charity campaign in favor of the “Heart & Pedals: The District Rickscha” project by HelpAge Deutschland e.V. 7 cents went into the project for every kilometer cycled. Network 1648, the Sparkasse Osnabrück Foundation and the Bedford Foundation donated a total of 55,000 euros. The participants were motivated by this charity idea, especially on rainy days, and appreciated the positive contribution to their fellow citizens.
Mayor Katharina Pötter was enthusiastic and praised the high number of participants and the charitable approach. A highlight will be the closing event on August 30th at the “Day of Lower Saxony”, which is being hosted by Osnabrück for the first time. CITY CYCLING has established itself as an international sustainability competition that invites everyone to leave their car behind for 21 days and actively ride their bikes. For the first time, this event was implemented as a charity campaign to promote mobility for older people.
Social projects for the community
The project to promote the district rickshaw from HelpAge Germany aims to enable mobility and social contacts for seniors. In Osnabrück, around 25% of the population is over 65 years old, and many live in isolation. Volunteer rickshaw drivers offer trips and create opportunities for encounters that enrich everyday life. Interested citizens can also start their own fundraising campaigns as part of CITY CYCLING in order to gain even more support for the rickshaw project.
The positive response to these campaigns shows how important it is to strengthen cohesion and social commitment in society. Even if it might rain, the joy of cycling and the willingness to do good seem unbroken and make the city of Osnabrück a showcase project in the areas of sustainability and community engagement.
