Osnabrück in the carnival frenzy: love, fun and new ideas for 2026!
The carnival season in Osnabrück is just around the corner and the anticipation is palpable! The 5th season begins on November 11, 2025, which is celebrated with a special motto:“For the love of carnival with a lot of heart for Osnabrück”. Frank II, the designated city prince, would like to organize the upcoming session entirely in the spirit of love for the city and togetherness. This message comes at a special time, because Ossen Saturday falls on Valentine's Day this year, on February 14, 2026. The celebration of love at Carnival is clearly the focus here.
As the NOZ reported that the PIN sale started under the motto “For a good cause”. The proceeds go directly to the Osnabrück women's shelter to support women who have experienced violence. A nice sign of solidarity during the carnival season!
The children's city prince couple
What is particularly pleasing is the introduction of the children's city prince couple, consisting of Ajla and Samir, both from Bad Essen and in the 7th grade of the high school. Ajla is a talented dancer in the Bad Essen dance sports guard, while Samir has family roots in carnival - his mother was active in Aachen. They also plan to sell their own PIN to “help children.” Michael Lührmann, the deputy district administrator, welcomed the young carnival participants with sweets and praised their commitment to volunteer work.
Lührmann emphasized the valuable solidarity that carnival brings to the city, something he often misses in politics between city and country. Karl-Heinz Budke, President of the BOK, was also positive about the upcoming carnival session and the momentum it will bring forward.
A look at the German carnival
Carnival, also known as Fasching or Fastnacht, has a long tradition in Germany that is spread across different regions. Originally celebrated in cities such as Mainz and Speyer, Cologne is one of the oldest hotspots of these celebrations, dating back to 1234. The big time for Carnival begins on November 11th at 11:11 a.m. with happy parades and festive events that often culminate in the days before Ash Wednesday.
Traditions include women cutting ties and the legendary burning of the Nubbel, a straw doll that marks the end of the carnival season. The costumes also vary depending on the region and create colorful scenes. The donuts, filled with jam, are particularly popular and are enjoyed everywhere in Germany.
Whether in Osnabrück or elsewhere, Carnival is a time of celebration, laughter and togetherness. Taking part in the celebrations brings people together and provides unforgettable moments. Carnival is more than just a celebration – it is a time when community is important. The Frankfurt Edit reports that during this time, festivals and competitions take place in various cities, enriching community life.
