Osnabrück donation record: over 570,000 euros for international aid!
In the Diocese of Osnabrück, the joint effort is clearly continuing: Last year, almost 571,000 euros went to international Caritas aid projects, supported by 2,115 committed donors. A big thank you goes to everyone who opened their hands to help even in difficult times. Alexandra Franke, a speaker at Caritas International, highlighted that these donations are particularly important as the aid budgets of public donors such as USAID and the German federal government have been drastically reduced. Despite these adverse circumstances, the population shows solidarity and support.
The main areas of use for the donations are in the Palestinian territories, Ukraine and Sudan. For Ukraine in particular, 1.3 million euros were made available in 2022 to create emergency accommodation in the border regions and to provide psychosocial advice to refugees in the Republic of Moldova. Caritas' commitment can be seen in the numbers: in 2022, over 5,600 people transferred a total of almost two million euros, a record result, which, however, fell to 988,000 euros in 2023. The decline is noticeable, but the will to help remains strong, as the diocese's Caritas explains in its current report.
The challenges of humanitarian aid
Despite the challenges caused by cuts in government aid, Caritas International remains active. The organization supports around 1,000 aid projects worldwide every year and works closely with 165 national Caritas organizations. President of the German Caritas Association, Eva Maria Welskop-Deffaa, describes the solidarity of private and public donors as crucial for the second-best result in the history of Caritas. Nevertheless, Oliver Müller, head of Caritas international, warns of the crumbling political support, which has also forced more than 60,000 humanitarian workers to lay off, including over 5,000 Caritas employees.
Caritas currently looks after more than nine million people in need of help and is fighting to localize help. In principle, 95 percent of humanitarian funds flow to large international organizations, whereby the involvement of local partners could play a crucial role in being able to provide aid on site more quickly and effectively.
Looking into the future
Despite the current challenges, Caritas remains optimistic. The committed support of citizens shows that joint action can bear fruit even in times of crisis. The figures of the past few years demonstrate the great heart and commitment of the people in the Diocese of Osnabrück. As the reports show, the commitment to combat need and misery remains necessary and is strengthened by donations from the population.
Caritas has maintained a clear position in these exciting and challenging times: helping where help is needed is more than just a fleeting gesture - it is an obligation. The coming years will show to what extent the supporters in the region are willing to continue to show a good hand and provide the necessary financial backing.
