Murder of jogger: suspect with a serious criminal record!

On Wednesday, September 10, a man born in 1965 was taken into custody on suspicion of being involved in the murder of 28-year-old jogger Agathe Hilairet. This case shocked the region around Vivonne, not far from Poitiers, especially because the victim was found dead in a forest on May 4th - three weeks after she disappeared during a running training session.

The suspect has a long list of criminal convictions. In 1994 he was sentenced to twelve years in prison for an assault using force, and in 2004 he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for repeated rape and sexual assault. His sentence was switched to outside care in April 2024, allowing him to work during the day and only return in the evening, which seems like a risky maneuver given his past. His conditions included avoiding contact with former victims and not owning any weapons. According to residents, the man was considered “discreet” and “peu sociable”, i.e. rather inconspicuous and reserved.

DNA evidence and confession

Another disturbing aspect of the case is that Agathe Hilairet's DNA was found in his vehicle. During his interviews, the man admitted to being at the crime scene and having contact with the victim, but denied having killed her. These contradictions could be crucial for investigators. On Friday September 12th he will appear before an examining magistrate to be formally charged with murder followed by kidnapping and false imprisonment.

The autopsy did not reveal any cause of death or signs of violence at this time, further complicating the situation. Nevertheless, the public prosecutor has requested that the suspect be taken into custody in order to prevent further potential dangers.

A look at recidivism rates

Given the shock that is looming over the community, the question arises as to how often such offenses happen again. According to current data, recidivism rates for sexual offenses vary internationally, but in Europe they range between 10 and 20 percent. In general, rates of sexual offenses are lower compared to many other offenses, which may be due to effective rehabilitation programs. In Germany and Austria, these rates are even below the international average, which raises hopes that the same will apply to the investigations and punitive measures in this case in the future.

The tragedy surrounding Agathe Hilairet brings to light a number of questions that have both legal and social dimensions. Local authorities are under pressure to resolve the case promptly and accurately, not only to ensure justice for the deceased, but also to restore public confidence in the safety of their community.
