Latest change in the law: speeding offenses now result in up to 3 months in prison!
From December 29, 2025, things will get serious: speeding more than 50 km/h over the permitted limit will be treated as a crime. This change is intended to promote safety on our roads. This measure was revealed on December 24th and is part of the law on combating traffic offenses passed on July 9th, 2025. This means significantly harsher penalties for traffic offenders who do not adhere to speed regulations.
The new regulations provide for up to three months in prison and fines of up to 3,750 euros, as well as an entry in the criminal register. Safety authorities warn that speeding is a particularly risky behavior and has often been linked to serious accidents in the past. According to a survey, there were over 63,000 speeding violations in 2024, an increase of 69% compared to 2017. Some drivers will even have to accept the loss of their vehicle and driving license for three years.
Mobility and dangers on the road
These measures are not only important from a legal perspective, they are also an urgent response to the alarming development in accident statistics. Traffic accident statistics provide comprehensive data on road safety, which makes it possible to better assess risks and take targeted measures. It is not uncommon for speeding to be a determining factor in the severity of traffic accidents, and this is particularly true in rural areas where several speeding violations with serious consequences have recently been recorded. One example from the region shows a driver who was caught driving at 197 km/h on the A20, where only 100 km/h is allowed.
The prefect Vincent Berton in Corrèze has further increased the number of controls in response to the increase in accidents. He receives support from experts such as Christian Ducher, President of the Automobile Club of Limousin, who emphasizes the need for stricter penalties, but at the same time points out the importance of safe alternatives for speed lovers, such as racetracks. Transport organizations in Haute-Vienne and Corrèze meet regularly to discuss strategies to improve road safety.
The vision for the future
It is time to increase understanding of the seriousness of speeding offences. In rural areas, where driving is often part of everyday life, young men are at increased risk of accidents. In order to prevent future relapses in speeding, the completion of safety courses is also one of the new requirements for caught traffic offenders. The safety authorities and organizations agree: Prevention is the key to improving the traffic situation.
The planned measures are intended to act as a deterrent and to raise awareness of the dangers on our roads. Daily traffic statistics and accident numbers are an important basis for future political decisions in the areas of traffic safety and infrastructure.
