Vermeeren dreams of World Cup title: OM star wants to lead Belgium to victory!
There is always something new to report in the football world, and the sun is shining particularly brightly for Belgian talent Arthur Vermeeren. The 20-year-old has set up his tent at Olympique de Marseille (OM), where he is trying his luck on loan from RB Leipzig this season. le10sport's Bernard Colas reports that Vermeeren has a big dream of one day winning the World Cup with the Belgian national team. An ambitious vision for a young player who has only recently joined the football elite.
Vermeeren's sporting ambitions are obvious. The talented midfielder was identified by coach Roberto De Zerbi as a key player for the club's future. Colas highlights that De Zerbi sees Vermeeren as “the future” of OM and is committed to its development by 2025. This shows that those responsible at OM have great confidence in the player's potential.
Transfer and career path
Arthur Vermeeren started his football journey at Lierse SK and continued his training at KV Malines before finally ending up at Royal Antwerp FC. He took his first steps in professional football on August 11, 2022, when he took the field against Lillestrøm SK in the UEFA Europa Conference League. It was the beginning of a promising career in which he quickly became a regular player. His performances at Antwerp soon caught the attention of bigger clubs.
In February 2023, he extended his contract until 2026 before moving to Atlético Madrid in the Spanish La Liga in January 2024. After returning to Belgium for a season during which he was loaned to RB Leipzig, the German club activated the purchase option in January 2025. His journey reached its climax with the most recent transfer to Olympique de Marseille.
National team and future prospects
Vermeeren also attracted international attention at a young age. He competed for Belgium in the U17 and U21 national teams and was called up to the senior national team for the first time in October 2023. He made his debut when he came on as a substitute in the 87th minute against Austria. He was also nominated for Euro 2024, although he was not used for the time being.
Vermeeren has already achieved several milestones. He scored his first professional goal in May 2023, and he also impressed in his first game for Marseille by providing an assist in the 4-0 win against FC Lorient. With a purchase option of around 20 million euros under discussion, his stay in Marseille could intensify even further in the near future.
Arthur Vermeeren is not only a player in a phase of advancement, but also one whose eyes are firmly set on the future. Whether he can achieve his World Cup dream remains to be seen, but with his talent and ambition, all doors are open to him.
