Speedy escape from police ends in water: shock for young drivers!

On October 27, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred in Barnstorf in the Diepholz district that left everyone involved in a state of shock. An 18-year-old driver ignored the police stop signal and quickly turned off his vehicle's lights, only to accelerate sharply. What was he thinking when he lost control and drove off the road at excessive speed? The vehicle ended up in the Hunte, where the water depth was fortunately shallow, which prevented the worst from happening. Three young people - the driver and two passengers aged 17 and 18 - managed to escape to the bank.

As can be seen from the reports from NDR, the fire brigade had to rescue the accident vehicle with an inflatable boat. Despite the shock the young people suffered, it was not the only challenge they faced. The emergency services treated the three and took them to hospital, where a blood test on the driver revealed the disturbing fact: he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs that were discovered in the car. When the driver's characteristics were checked, it turned out that the driver also had to hand over his driving license because, according to the law, there is no tolerance for drugs on the road - a set of rules that is of great importance for all road users, as the ADAC information emphatically emphasizes.

The consequences of drugged driving

The legal consequences for driving under the influence of drugs are clear: even the smallest amounts are prohibited, and proven consumption can result in prison sentences of up to five years or high fines. While cannabis may be legal in certain circumstances, driving under the influence remains illegal. Interestingly, consumption significantly impairs concentration, attention and reaction time. As of August 22, 2024, adults will be subject to a limit of 3.5 ng/ml THC in blood serum, while novice drivers and those under 21 years of age are absolutely not allowed to drive if they have consumed even the smallest amount.

According to the ADAC, the costs that can arise when driving on drugs are between 5,000 and 7,000 euros, with these expenses including both legal fees and procedural costs. There is also a risk of civil law consequences such as shared liability in the event of accidents and possible recourse claims through motor vehicle liability insurance. It is all the more important that such incidents are taken seriously, because drug use and safe road traffic are absolutely incompatible.

In this case, the MPU (medical-psychological examination) and proof of abstinence are still pending, which will represent an additional challenge for the young driver. No matter how you feel about drugs, one thing is certain: road safety is a top priority. It is therefore essential to take a close look at the risks that drugs pose.
