Shock at the Old Town Festival: 18-year-old falls from the Beat Jumper!
On Sunday, August 12, 2025, a serious incident occurred at the popular old town festival in Jever in the Friesland district. An 18-year-old woman fell from the Beat Jumper ride, causing excitement and concern among festival-goers. According to police, the young woman fell from a height of around three to four meters and sustained serious injuries. Fortunately, her life is not in danger, as a police spokesman confirmed. The entire situation is of course extremely unfortunate and raises questions about the safety of the rides. According to reports, the safety bar that was supposed to protect the woman may not have been positioned correctly. These circumstances are now being intensively investigated.
Immediately after the accident, the injured person was taken to hospital where she is being treated. The operator of the ride did not comment due to the ongoing investigation. The trade inspection office and the TÜV are responsible for the investigation together with the building authority of the city of Jever. In the meantime, the “Beat Jumper” has already been dismantled in consultation with the responsible authorities to enable a careful inspection. It is noteworthy that the ride was already in the headlines three years ago when an employee died in an accident at the Emder Matjesfest.
Call for help
Of particular concern is the proliferation of videos that appeared on platforms such as TikTok shortly after the incident. One shows the safety bar opening, another shows the injured woman on the ground. Police are appealing to the public not to share such footage but to take it directly to the police. Filming and publishing helpless people is not only unethical, but can also be considered a criminal offense, the police spokesman warned. This request is intended to help protect the privacy of those affected and not to endanger the investigation.
The safety situation on rides
The incident in Jever highlights the safety situation on rides in Germany. The TÜV Association published suggestions for improving the safety of rides in April 2023 in order to minimize the risk of such accidents. These include, among other things, closer control and the qualification of staff. Accidents often occur not because of technical defects, but because of errors in operation and use. Security is and remains a central issue for operators and supervisory bodies.
The Showmen's Association assures that incidents with rides are “extremely rare” and attaches great importance to compliance with the highest safety standards. However, every incident has the potential to raise safety awareness among both visitors and operators. We hope that the circumstances will be clarified soon and wish the injured woman a speedy recovery.
