Spectacular finale: fireworks over the Kiel Fjord at the end of the week!
Kiel Week, one of the largest sailing events in the world, ended on June 29, 2025, leaving around three million visitors in the city. The theme of this year’s event, “Home Under the Stars,” attracted people in droves. The spectacle concluded with an impressive fireworks display over the Kiel Fjord, which went off at 11 p.m. and bathed the night in sparkling light. There was great anticipation for the event, as an impressive drone and laser show was also promised, which thrilled the visitors. A special highlight of Kiel Week was the windjammer parade, which took place on Saturday and captivated spectators both on land and on the water. Around 170,000 people watched the impressive spectacle, in which the sailing training ship “Gorch Fock” sailed at the head of the parade under full sail. The conditions were optimal and the wind conditions contributed to the perfect atmosphere. The “Gorch Fock” was traveling at 6.5 knots (approx. 12 km/h), which required an exemption as a parade speed of 3.5 to 4 knots is normally required. The Daily Mirror counted over 120 ships, including 59 traditional sailing vessels, which sailed in formation on the water.
A feast for the senses
Friends of sailing and maritime culture could look forward to numerous events. With a total of around 2,000 program items in the areas of culture, sport, entertainment and science, there was something for every taste. The Kiel Week 2025 was the 144th edition of the event and focused on top sporting achievements, while in the coming year 2024 the roots of the Kiel Week will be highlighted in a special edition - planned from September 5th to 13th. Every year, Kiel Week shows how diverse and inviting the region is, and in 2024 it will continue to learn from the past to create an even better experience.
