On the night of Monday, June 23, 2025, a tragic fire disaster occurred in Wilhelmshaven that shook the entire city. At around 2:10 a.m. a fire broke out in the lobby of an empty toy store, resulting in a devastating firefighting effort. The fire spread quickly through thick smoke in the stairwell, blocking the escape route for residents on the upper floors. A total of 19 people had to be rescued from the residential and commercial building. The rescue of a family of seven from the attic by the fire department was particularly dramatic. Evacuation and support for those affected
The three surviving children were treated at clinics in Bremen, Düsseldorf and Oldenburg, while four adults, including a pregnant woman, were hospitalized with suspected smoke poisoning. The apartments in the affected house are uninhabitable, which is why the residents had to be accommodated in emergency accommodation. After the operation, those affected were offered emergency pastoral care on a public utility bus to support them during this difficult time.
