Grün-Weiß Schwerin: Here’s to an exciting year of handball in the third league!
The third division handball players from Grün-Weiß Schwerin are in the starting blocks for the 2025/26 season. On September 13th the team will have an exciting duel with newcomers SC SFN Vechta. However, coach Johannes Prothmann warns of a thankless task, because the Vechta girls play fast handball and have only just celebrated promotion. The speed at which they score goals on the counter-attack can pose challenges for Schwerin, as Nordkurier reports.
“Vechta is euphoric and hungry,” said Prothmann, who is confident about the preparation and the positive impressions from the test games. The Green-White team has strengthened across the board. Young talents such as Tamina Kugler, Olivia Schwarz and Emma Homeyer are moving up from the B youth team, while the only external newcomer, Rebecca Rappitsch from Austria, is further increasing the squad's breadth.
Insights into the squad
The departures of Monja Kix, Miriam Kix and Julie Norman Jensen leave a footprint, but Daria Rassau, an actor, returns to the team after injury problems. The squad is not only becoming broader, but also offers fresh impetus to remain competitive in the highly competitive 3rd League North.
In the last four years, the team has finished second once and third three times, and Prothmann is tirelessly striving to once again be in the top group and drive the team's further development. “Sporting qualifications and financial feasibility are essential for a possible promotion to the second division,” he admits. He adds that the 2nd Bundesliga in women's handball is not a professional league and the difference to the 3rd league is relatively large.
Promotion to the 3rd league
The conditions in the new season are exciting. The 3rd women's handball league starts in three seasons with 12 teams each. This structure was redesigned with the introduction of the Regionalliga. In the north group, SG Todesfelde/Leezen and SFN Vechta secured the promotion places, while in the middle group TuS Königsdorf was at the bottom. TuS Schutterwald and TSV Ismaning also prevailed early on in the southern group, according to Handball-Welt.
With the reduced promotion mode, only six teams have now qualified for the 3rd league, which further intensifies the competitive situation. These changes were necessary because there was no participant registration from the Ostsee-Spree regional league for the 2024/25 season, so that the northern group was only played with three teams, as Wikipedia) explains.
If everything goes well, Grün-Weiß Schwerin could continue to assert itself in the top group and perhaps soon be promoted to higher leagues. The first points of the new year are within reach, and the girls have to tackle the first challenges with commitment. We are excited to see how the season will develop!
