Itzehoe Eagles celebrate narrow home win: Coach criticizes the use of opportunities!

On October 6, 2025, the Itzehoe Eagles were finally able to celebrate their first home win of the season when they defeated Rasta Vechta 2 96:86. The game took place at home and was a real spectacle that captivated the fans. The victory was hard-fought, which is particularly clear from the score after quarters: 26:18, 15:19, 25:31 and finally 30:18.

After a strong start to the first half, which ended 41:37 for the Eagles, Tobias Möller stood out right at the start with a spectacular dunk. But Vechta didn't let themselves be shaken off and temporarily equalized in the third quarter before they even took the lead 68:66. However, the Eagles were not impressed by this and started the last quarter with an impressive 9-0 run, which laid the foundation for the victory.

Strong comeback and individual performances

The final minutes were a real thriller. Vechta tried to fight their way back into the game, but could not overcome the strong defense of the Itzehoe Eagles. Sydnee Bijlsma in particular showed strong nerves by contributing seven points in the final minutes of the match. Trey McBride was once again the team's top scorer with an outstanding 22 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds. He was followed by Finn Fleute with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Bijlsma with 17 points and 5 assists.

Coach Timo Völkerink left a mixed impression despite the victory. “There is always room for improvement,” were his words after the game, emphasizing the missed opportunities. He sets high standards for himself and the team while supporting his players with energetic coaching on the sidelines.

The look into the future

While the Eagles can celebrate the victory at the moment, Völkerink is already focusing on the tasks ahead. He will remain the team's head coach this season and is currently in Croatia to prepare for the upcoming season. “We want to keep the core of the team and at the same time fix weak points,” he emphasizes. More depth in the squad is needed, especially after the departures of Leevi Erkkilä and Leo Finck.

Volker Hambrock, who recently took over the management of Eagles Management GmbH, praises Völkerink as an “outstanding trainer and pleasant person” whose commitment to the club is tireless. The club seems to be on the right track and both fans and players are hopeful for the future.

The first home win could be an important step for the Itzehoe Eagles on their way into the new season.
