Unemployment in Wilhelmshaven: Still an alarming 11%!

In Wilhelmshaven there are light and shadows on the job market. With a current unemployment rate of 11 percent at the end of August 2024, it shows that, despite a noticeable decline compared to the previous year, when the rate was 11.6 percent, the city still has the highest rate among the nine offices in the Oldenburg-Wilhelmshaven agency district. This reports NWZonline.

The decline in unemployment in the 15 to 25 age group, which fell by an impressive 13.1 percent, is particularly encouraging. A positive sign is also the decline in the civilian workforce with foreign nationality, where unemployment was reduced by 9.1 percent. Nevertheless, the high proportion of long-term unemployed remains worrying: almost 50 percent of the unemployed have not found employment subject to social security contributions for more than a year.

The current situation of jobs

On the other hand, the number of reported job offers is declining. There are currently only 727 positions advertised - 40 fewer than in July and 307 fewer than in the same month last year, which corresponds to a decrease of 30 percent. This makes a good hand for future applicants even more important, as 708 of these positions are subject to social security contributions and 634 can be filled immediately.

The situation for the 3,184 unemployed people who receive citizen's benefit is also interesting. For those who receive citizen's benefit, the unemployment rate is 8.1 percent. This number shows one of the challenges that Wilhelmshaven is facing. It is also clear that 34 percent of the unemployed people served by the job center are 50 years of age or older, with 25 percent even being 55 years of age or older.

A look at the numbers

A similar picture emerges across Germany: the unemployed are loud Statista People who are temporarily unemployed and have registered with the employment agency. The rule is that only those who are able and willing to work count as unemployed. Participants in activating measures are not included in the unemployment figures.

Another aspect is the introduction of citizen's benefit, which has been paid instead of unemployment benefit II since 2023. The standard rates were increased and some regulations were relaxed in order to make it easier for those affected to access the labor market. But the path to a stable labor market situation remains challenging in Wilhelmshaven.
