Volunteer Day: Peter Ibrom honored as a sports legend in Lingen!

A cheer for volunteering: Peter Ibrom, the veteran of Wilhelmshaven sports, was honored by Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Olaf Lies on November 12, 2025 as part of the “Volunteering Day” ceremony in Lingen. Ibrom has been a member of the Wilhelmshaven Sports and Games Club (WSSV) for over 70 years and, as co-founder of the volleyball department in 1970, had a decisive influence on sporting events in the region. This honor not only reflects his personal commitment, but also the great appreciation that he is shown for his numerous voluntary activities.

“A life for sport” – that’s how you could summarize the 80-year-old’s philosophy. Ibrom is still active as a trainer and is also committed to promoting sport beyond the borders of Wilhelmshaven. He is particularly known for his work at the municipal beach volleyball facility on Freiligrathstrasse, where as a groundskeeper he represents a link between the past and the present. His grandparents had lived near the facility since 1924, which was once a naval sports complex and remains vivid in his childhood memories.

A groundskeeper with a heart

The sports facility has a profound meaning for Ibrom. “I grew up here,” he reveals with a smile and reveals that the groundskeeper job is a tradition in his family. His grandfather was not only a groundskeeper, but also the first greenkeeper in Wilhelmshaven. The memories of the former naval sports facility are unforgettable for Ibrom; As a child, he was sometimes allowed to swim in the outdoor pool, which has now been replaced by the six beach volleyball courts. “It was a completely different time,” he indulges in nostalgia.

The fact that Ibrom spent 42 years in the Navy, six years as a professional soldier and the rest as a programmer, made him the man he is today. The athletic trainer combines his passion for young athletes with an impressive life path. This unique combination of personal commitment and professional experience makes him a role model in the region.

A sporting legacy

The award from Prime Minister Lies, who was also Mayor Carsten Feist at the event, underlines the recognition of Ibrom's life's work. Feist expressed thanks and recognition for his services to sport and the community. The honor on “Volunteer Day” is not only a personal recognition, but also a sign of how important the commitment of volunteers is to society. It is therefore only right and proper to celebrate this effort in public with appropriate honor.

In today's world, when volunteer work is often forgotten, it is even nicer to have a person like Peter Ibrom at the top of the sports community. He shows what it means to “don’t do that” – in the sense of: getting involved in the community and wrapping yourself up there. In everyday usage, derived from Italian, the term “don” means something like “lord” or “a prince”, and Ibrom would certainly not deny that. Its importance for sport in Wilhelmshaven is undeniable.

Indeed, a legend lives for sport and remains active even at the age of 80. Peter Ibrom shows how to live a life full of passion and dedication to the community, not only earning the recognition of those around him, but also setting an excellent example for future generations.
