Bankruptcy shock! Large textile retailer The Fabric is closing branches

The Der Stoff group of companies, known for its numerous textile branches, has filed for bankruptcy. As the Mercury reported, the insolvency proceedings were opened on October 1, 2025 by the Nordhorn District Court. The group includes two companies – Der Stoff Stoffhandels GmbH and Hemkon GmbH – and employs almost 300 people in a total of 37 branches in Germany.

What leads to such drastic measures? The closures of various branches indicate that the economic situation is tense. The branches in Hamburg and Dinslaken were closed at the beginning of October, and now the shops in Wiesbaden, Bremen-Vegesack and Naumburg are also affected by the closure. A total of eleven employees have to vacate their jobs. Further closures cannot be ruled out: the branch in Wilhelmshaven will close in mid-October for personnel reasons.

Crisis management and future perspectives

The restructuring is taking place as part of a self-managed process, explains the chip. Restructuring expert Eric Coordes is optimistic and assumes that the restructuring plans that are being drawn up could be completed at the beginning of next year. The group of companies was still active in 2024 with annual sales of 13 million euros, but was unable to compensate for ongoing losses at the affected locations.

The Lower Saxony Consumer Center has also warned customers of the online shop to take action to avoid possible losses. This goes hand in hand with a general wave of bankruptcies that is currently affecting Germany. In 2023, about 110,200 bankruptcies were counted, showing a worrying trend in the economy, such as the Statista determines. Services have been particularly affected and many businesses, including large retail chains, are struggling to survive.

How will the market develop? It is clear that the situation remains challenging for many companies in the textile sector. Nevertheless, it remains to be hoped that the chosen restructuring strategies will be successful and that the remaining 37 Der Stoff branches can soon be stabilized again. A successful restart would not only be desirable for the employees, but also for the trading group's loyal customers.
