Cupra Born: Production in Wolfsburg or Zwickau? The future is uncertain!
In recent days, rumors have been circulating about possible changes to the Cupra Born production facility within the Volkswagen Group, particularly in relation to the planned relocation from the Zwickau factory to Wolfsburg or Emden. How News38 reported, the course has not yet been finally set. It is currently expected that the Cupra Born and other electric car models will roll off the assembly line in Wolfsburg and Emden from 2027, while at the same time there is speculation that production could continue in Saxony. The VW spokesman is reserved and refers to works council chairwoman Daniela Cavallo, who emphasizes: “The rumor that the Cupra Born will not be relocated to Wolfsburg is not true.”
The discrepancy between the statements and the deficiencies affecting Zwickau sheds light on the complex situation: the plant in Saxony, which recently received large investments, is facing the challenge of possible underutilization if the planned relocation goes ahead. The Cupra Born is internally considered a model with certain limitations in terms of production volumes, with a sales forecast of around 80,000 units per year, which experts consider to be over-optimistic. Only 11,000 units were sold in the first quarter of 2025, which calls into question the requirements for capacity utilization of the plants.
Strategic considerations and challenges
Volkswagen is also faced with the end of Golf production in Wolfsburg, which is scheduled to end in 2026. This leads to considerations as to whether the Cupra Born can be viewed as a partial replacement solution to maintain production weight. In addition, some production lines could be relocated to North America to take advantage of tariff advantages if numerous models are produced there. The shift could gradually lead to Zwickau only producing the Audi Q4 e-tron and its variants, which puts the long-term prospects of the plant in a precarious situation.
How evmagz Volkswagen management has been discussing for weeks whether production of the Cupra Born should remain in Zwickau or not. In addition to the internal concerns, the question arises as to how the automotive industry generally reacts to the turning point of change, which is characterized by new competitors and disruptive technologies. These developments have led the group to adapt its mobility strategies to the new circumstances and to position itself as “The Global Automotive Tech Driver”, as in the Group Strategy explained.
Volkswagen is not only facing internal challenges, but also has to respond externally to changing market conditions. Shaping mobility in the next decades will be crucial in order to actively support change and respond to customer needs. In these dynamic times, it is essential to make decisions that ensure the long-term success of the company.
