VfL Wolfsburg: Women laugh and suffer in the DFB Cup and European Championship preparations!
There have been turbulent developments at VfL Wolfsburg in the last few days that have fans excited. A DFB Cup game against SV Hemelingen is coming up and promises to calm minds. On August 16, 2025 at 3:30 p.m. things will really get going in the stadium when the team fights for a title again. The first games of the new season won't be long in coming.
But it's not just the men who are active. The VfL women, who are currently preparing for the UEFA Women’s Euro, have numerous national players in their ranks. Around half of the team is currently with their national teams to prepare for the challenges ahead. Exciting test games are scheduled for June 26th:
- Niederlande gegen Finnland um 20 Uhr
- Norwegen trifft auf Schweden um 18 Uhr (mit Justine Kielland, Guro Bergsvand und Thea Bjelde)
- Die Schweiz spielt gegen Tschechien um 18 Uhr (mit Smilla Vallotto)
- Australien (mit Sharn Freier) misst sich zweimal mit Slowenien: am 26. Juni um 13 Uhr und am 29. Juni um 12 Uhr
Defeat in the DFB Cup
While preparations for the Euros begin, the VfL women also have to cope with a bitter defeat. In their last DFB Cup game, the team failed in the quarterfinals against TSG Hoffenheim. With a final score of 0-1, Wolfsburg had to admit defeat, which was their first defeat in the DFB Cup since mid-November 2013. Before this defeat, they had won an incredible 52 games in a row and won ten titles, an impressive record that has now been abruptly interrupted, as [ZDF] reports.
In the game in question, the lineups looked like this: TSG Hoffenheim relied on keeper Tufekovic, while the defense consisted of Janssens, Cazalla, Doorn and Rankin. Memeti and Diehm provided the midfield engine with Feldkamp and Grabowska. Kössler and Cerci were at the start in the attack. Coach Theodoros Dedes had adjusted his team well. Wolfsburg had Borbe in goal, Hendrich, Minge and Dijkstra in defense and Wilms, Huth, Lattwein, Linder and Jonsdottir in midfield. Popp and Brand were responsible for the goals in the attack, supervised by coach Tommy Stroot. The referee, Karoline Wacker, whistled the controversial duel.
Preview of upcoming games
Despite these setbacks, VfL looks forward to the challenges ahead with confidence. There is another game on August 22, 2025, when it is against Bayer 04 Leverkusen at 2 p.m. in the “Grüne Au” stadium in Hof. In between there will be a test match against RB Leipzig on July 17, 2025 at 2 p.m. at the Stadion am Bad in Markranstädt. These games could play an important role in getting the team back on track.
And not to forget: husband of VfL legends, Uwe Funke, is celebrating his 82nd birthday today. He played for the club for 13 years in the 1960s and remains an important part of VfL history. We wish him all the best!
All in all, there is a lot to look forward to for VfL Wolfsburg in the coming weeks. Support your team in these crucial encounters! More details can be found at [VfL Wolfsburg] and [ZDF].
