VW currywurst as a ready meal: The classic for the microwave!
The legendary VW currywurst has a new appearance! From mid-June 2025, the famous sausage will be available as a ready meal in selected Edeka and Netto branches. And the best part? It can be prepared in the microwave in just six to seven minutes. VW not only wants to delight the loyal fans of currywurst, but also appeal to a broader audience and continue the success story of this special sausage. news38.de reports on a presentation that took place on May 27, 2025 at the VW factory in Wolfsburg.
The new Currywurst variant consists of sliced sausage that is already refined with curry in the product - no additional curry powder is required. So that the sausage meets the high VW standards, it is produced directly in the in-house butcher shop in Wolfsburg. VW head of gastronomy Markus Greiner emphasized the importance of currywurst for the company, a tradition that began in 1973.
Regional launch and expansion plans
In the first phase, the sausage will initially be available in four Edeka regions: Berlin, Edeka Nord (Hamburg), Edeka Hessenring (Kassel) and Edeka Minden (Lower Saxony). The goal is to spread it nationwide so that many of us will soon be able to enjoy the delicious sausage without having to travel to Wolfsburg. In the past, the sausage was once banned from the VW canteen, but in 2023 there was a return to the popular dish, which was always available in over 30 canteens and kiosks in the factory. According to n-tv.de, over 8.5 million pieces were sold in 2024 - that's more sausages than vehicle sales in the same year!
A small setback for vegetarians and vegans: There will be no vegetarian or vegan version of the new currywurst. Dietmar Schulz, head of food production at VW, explains that the demand for such alternatives to currywurst is quite low and that separating the production lines is seen as challenging. Interestingly, in recent years there has been an increase in vegetarian and vegan menus in factory canteens, which has elicited mixed reactions from staff members.
History of the VW currywurst
The VW Currywurst looks back on a remarkable history: it has been an integral part of the company's history since 1973 and has achieved a special status with its own part number, 199 398 500 A. Volkswagen even achieved a new sales record for the sausage in 2024. Before the sausage was advertised at the first press event, there was a comprehensive change in the catering area. In 2021, the canteen in the brand high-rise was completely converted to meat-free dishes, but this was not received enthusiastically by everyone. But the healing came quickly: with the sausage, a piece of tradition is now back on the employees' menus and soon on the customers' tables.
The VW currywurst has much more to offer than just good taste. Their success not only reflects Volkswagen's preference for hearty food, but also Volkswagen's commitment to masterfully combining tradition and modern nutritional trends. One thing is certain: Currywurst remains a hot topic, even beyond the borders of car manufacturers!
For all lovers of the special sausage who don't have time for the factory tour, the introduction of ready meals is a reason to be happy. VW is once again showing how to rethink traditions and at the same time keep the economy running. This is good business – not just for Volkswagen, but also for us consumers.
