VW-Currywurst celebrates the opening of the new sausage hall in Wolfsburg!
Volkswagen not only revolutionized the automotive industry, but also created a culinary hit in the form of its legendary Currywurst. The in-house sausage has been produced in the butcher shop in Wolfsburg since 1973 and has now become an integral part of the company culture. With its own item number – 199 398 500 A – the currywurst is almost a product in itself. Up to seven million sausages were sold every year in Spitze, and they are offered not only in the factory canteens, but also as souvenirs during factory tours, such as News38 reported.
Sausage is highly prized in a new sausage hall that recently opened in Hall 50a. The hall is not only an exhibition space with historical pictures and old machines, but also a place where the handwritten original recipe from 1973 is kept in a safe. Only two people have the keys to this culinary treasure: gastro chef Markus Greiner and Dietmar Schulz, head of food production. In the Volkswagen cosmos, the currywurst recipe has achieved the status of a cultural asset.
From the workshop to the supermarket
From mid-June 2025, the VW currywurst will take a new step towards a broader public. It will then be available as a ready-to-eat microwave meal in selected supermarkets. Sausage lovers in northern and eastern Germany can initially buy from Edeka and Netto before the aim is for nationwide distribution. The sausage has established itself as a real bestseller: 8.552 million units were sold in 2024, while only 5.2 million VW vehicles changed hands n-tv reported.
The ready-made sausage is special because it does not contain the typical curry powder, which is often used as an additive. Instead, the spices are already integrated into the sausage and the ketchup that goes with it. Previously, the sausage was only available in factory canteens and some supermarkets, where you had to fry it yourself. An entertaining debate caused a stir in 2021 when sausage was to be banned from the VW canteen - but this decision was reversed in 2023.
Currywurst and history
The sausage has not only established itself in VW culture, it also reflects the history of the company. VW has stood for innovative strength since the post-war years and has established itself as one of the most successful volume manufacturers in the world. Since the 1970s, the company has gained momentum with flexible manufacturing systems and a new generation of models, which also includes the Golf and the Scirocco. With a clear focus on electromobility and digitalization, Volkswagen is ready for the future, while currywurst still has a place in people's hearts. No matter whether you see it in the sausage hall or soon buy it in the supermarket - the VW currywurst remains irresistible, as is the history of Volkswagen Volkswagen Newsroom is to be read.
