Wolfsburg has reason to be happy! The city has been officially selected as one of the eight hosts for UEFA Women's EURO 2029, it was announced on Wednesday in Nyon, Switzerland. The Volkswagen Arena, which hosted the Women's World Cup in 2011, will once again take center stage at this major event. The FIFA Women's World Cup already offered a taste of what the arena has to offer, and now the next big international challenge is about to follow.
Mayor Dennis Weilmann (CDU) was enthusiastic about the decision and speaks of it as an important step for the city of Wolfsburg. “We applied intensively for this tournament and the confirmation is a great success for our region,” said Weilmann. The city of Wolfsburg not only has sporting ambitions, but also the right infrastructure to host such an event.
Strong commitment to women's football
Those responsible at VfL Wolfsburg, including managing director Dr. Tim Schumacher, emphasized the excellent conditions on site and the important requirements that make Wolfsburg attractive as a tournament location. “The decision is a sign for women’s football in Germany,” explains Schumacher. Peter Christiansen, another managing director of VfL Wolfsburg- Fußball GmbH, also sees this commitment as motivation for the entire region and for the development of women's football in general.
For Jens Hofschröer, the city's head of economic affairs, the event is more than just a football tournament. He expects the event to bring lasting stimulus to tourism, gastronomy and the local economy. “Wolfsburg has the experience and know-how to successfully organize international sporting events,” Hofschröer continues.
Outlook on the planning
With the confirmation of the UEFA Women's EURO 2029, the concrete planning phase for the tournament in summer 2029 now begins. The city's sports-loving population and the short distances within Wolfsburg are just some of the advantages that the city has to offer. The anticipation for the event is already noticeable and those responsible are well prepared for the challenges ahead.
Now we can only hope that the preparations go smoothly and that the Volkswagen Arena sets a bright example for women's football in 2029. Wolfsburg is ready and the fans can look forward to exciting games!
