A1 near Bargteheide: Successfully ended closure - free trip now!

Bargteheide, Deutschland - On June 22, 2025, the closure of the A1 on the Kreuz Bargteheide was lifted 20 hours earlier than planned. Originally, the directional lane to the south was supposed to remain closed until Sunday evening, but the work on Friday evening (June 20) at 10 p.m. was faster than expected, so that the traffic was released at midnight. The work was necessary to hang new bridge carriers and contributed to modernizing the infrastructure of the highway. According to NDR the traffic was diverted during the closure via the A20, B207 and A24.

The Autobahn GmbH, Lübeck branch, had previously pointed out that the 46-hour full closure of the directional lane in Bargteheide was necessary due to the extensive bridge work. Drivers were asked to use the extensions signposted on a large scale and not to drive through surrounding communities. It was also advisable to check whether the trip is imperative before the start of the journey, since long waiting times could not be ruled out. This information has distributed Ahrensburg-Portal.

background of the bridge work

But why is this measure so important? The performance of the Autobahnbrücken has an impact on the availability of the entire motorway network, which comprises around 13,200 kilometers in Germany, including 28,000 bridge partial structures. As explained on autobahn.de, around 8,000 bridges will have to be renewed or modernized nationwide in the coming years. Many of these bridges come from years of construction before 1985 when the standards in terms of traffic loads and materials were far less progressive.

The persistently high use of motorways by goods and heavy goods traffic means that many of the old bridges have to be reinforced or even completely rebuilt. The Ministry of Transport has therefore paid special attention to bridges that are crucial for highly loaded highways. A bridge competence center was founded to accelerate the modernization of these buildings.

With the premature release of the road on the Kreuz Bargteheide, road users now have the opportunity to get faster access to the motorway again. Work in this region is part of a comprehensive program to improve and ensure the transport infrastructure in Germany.
