A1 near Bargteheide: closure successfully completed – free travel from now on!
On June 22, 2025, the closure of the A1 at the Bargteheide intersection was lifted 20 hours earlier than planned. The southbound lane was originally supposed to remain closed until Sunday evening at 8 p.m., but the work on Friday evening (June 20) at 10 p.m. progressed faster than expected, meaning traffic was opened at midnight. The work was necessary to attach new bridge girders and helped modernize the highway's infrastructure. According to NDR, traffic was rerouted via the A20, B207 and A24 during the closure.
Autobahn GmbH, Lübeck branch, had previously pointed out that the 46-hour full closure of the carriageway in Bargteheide was necessary due to the extensive bridge work. Drivers were asked to use the widely signposted diversions and not to drive through surrounding communities. It was also advised to check before starting the journey whether the journey was absolutely necessary, as longer waiting times could not be ruled out. This information was distributed by Ahrensburg-Portal.
Background of the bridge work
But why is this measure so important? The performance of the motorway bridges influences the availability of the entire motorway network, which covers around 13,200 kilometers in Germany, including 28,000 partial bridge structures. As explained on autobahn.de, around 8,000 bridges nationwide will need to be replaced or modernized in the coming years. Many of these bridges date from before 1985, when standards for traffic loads and materials were far less advanced.
The continued high use of motorways by freight and heavy goods traffic means that many of the old bridges have to be reinforced or even completely rebuilt. The Ministry of Transport has therefore paid particular attention to bridges, which are crucial for heavily used highways. A bridge competence center was established to accelerate the modernization of these structures.
With the early opening of the road at the Bargteheide intersection, road users now have the opportunity to gain quicker access to the motorway again. The work in this region is part of a comprehensive program to improve and secure the transport infrastructure in Germany.
