Bahn chaos in July: commuters have to switch to replacement buses!

Neumünster, Deutschland - The summer months bring with them a number of challenges for commuters in Schleswig-Holstein and beyond. The Deutsche Bahn and the Nordbahn in particular must expect significant restrictions due to extensive construction work on important routes in the months of June and July 2025. As reported [ndr.de] (https://www.ndr.de/chleswig-holstein/ausfaelle-bei-bahn-diese-zuben-in-fieben-im-juli-nichtinbahn 3528.html), commuters from cities such as Hamburg, Lübeck and Neumünster are particularly affected.

The reasons for the impairments are profound construction work that extends to the Hamburg-Lübeck-Lübeck-Lübeck-Lübeck-Lübeck-Lübeck-and several Nordbahn lines. The timetables can be found both in the Deutsche Bahn app and on the Nordbahn homepage. So if you plan to travel, you should find out in advance and, if necessary, consider detours.

important routes and downhill changes

The restrictions on the connection between Hamburg and Neumünster are particularly important. From June 30th to July 6th there are no trains between 6:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., but the RE 70 offers hourly alternatives. Later, from July 25th to August 4th, the trains in Hamburg-Altona begin and end. On the Hamburg Hbf-Ahrensburg route, travelers must also count on failures and bus replacement traffic on July 4th and 5th as well as between July 7 and 9.

For the Nordbahn, it applies that from 11th to 18th July the rail replacement traffic between Büsum and Heide should support the night owls while driving to Neumünster. The RB 82, which runs from Bad Segeberg to Bad Oldesloe, also has to overcome changes. From Friday evening to Monday morning, numerous trains will be canceled, which makes travel planning more difficult.

general renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin

railway line

From August 1, 2025, the general renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin railway line will begin, which is expected to last until April 30, 2026. Unfortunately, this will also have a noticeable impact on passengers in Schleswig-Holstein, especially from Kiel, Neumünster and Rendsburg. Planned failures are also intended for Eurocity connections from Kiel and Flensburg to Prague, such as kn-online.de reported.

A particularly uncomfortable detail for the travelers: the RE 83, who drives from Kiel via Lübeck to Lüneburg, will fail between Mölln and Lauenburg. However, there will be buses as an alternative that should bring travelers to Hamburg, where they can be connected to the express rail network.

long -term construction sites and the future outlook

These measures are just a part of a much larger plan. According to adac.de, Deutsche Bahn plans to block 42 important substructures for basic renovations until 2031. This will lead to other large construction sites, route closures and timetable changes that could last until the mid -2030s. There are numerous construction sites for 2025, including in the Berlin Knot and on the route between Hamburg and Lübeck, which we have to keep in mind in the coming years.

In the meantime, it is advisable for all travelers to remain flexible and to find out about possible changes in good time. As is well known, the summer months are hectic, and with the current framework, passengers have to ensure that they travel well prepared on vacation or to work.
