Insolvency in the Geesthacht hospital: 700 jobs at risk!

There is currently dark news in Geesthacht, in the Duchy of Lauenburg district: the local hospital has filed for bankruptcy. This was ordered on Tuesday by the Schwarzenbek district court. This is a self-administered procedure that raises many concerns. Up to700 employeesare affected, and several departments, including gynecology and obstetrics, are expected to close. The hospital was only taken over by Thomas Pötzsch from Rellingen in July 2025, but now the signs point to a storm. NDR reports about how this development could strain the health system in the region.

A hospital, or “hospital” in German, not only provides medical care, but is often a source of support for the local community. In the case of Geesthacht, the loss of this facility could have a noticeable impact on the population's health care. Such an imbalance in medical services raises questions about future care and is a cause for concern for many of those affected. Word Hippo explained, what constitutes a hospital and what role it plays in the social structure.

A topic of conversation in the region

While concerns about the hospital are stirring people's minds, there are also other exciting topics in Schleswig-Holstein. There is a football game on Friday evening that will make the fans' hearts beat faster. Holstein Kiel competes against Preußen Münster in the second Bundesliga. After their recent cup success against VfL Wolfsburg, the Kiel team want to achieve their first league win since mid-September. Kick-off is at 6:30 p.m. in Münster – keep your fingers crossed!

There are also bright spots in politics: Beate Raudies, vice president of the state parliament and president of the synod in the Rantzau-Münsterdorf church district, will be honored with the Bugenhagen Medal. This award is a recognition of her voluntary work in the Nordkirche and youth work in Elmshorn, which is a valuable support for the community.

Traffic congestion and weather forecasts

In addition to the current reports about the hospital, there is also practical information for all travelers: The ADAC expects a lot of traffic in Schleswig-Holstein at the end of the holiday, especially on the A7 and A1 motorways and in the greater Hamburg area. So if you're traveling on the weekend, you should plan a little more time and take better precautions.

As far as the weather is concerned, Schleswig-Holstein has cloudy but mostly dry skies. The temperatures range between 11 and 12 degrees, although in North Frisia there is hardly any chance of rain at first and some rain towards the evening. An overview to start the day well prepared!

The region currently has a lot to offer with these topics: from medical challenges to sporting events and important political awards - life in Schleswig-Holstein remains exciting and varied!
