Route closure between Hamburg and Elmshorn: Waiting for the DB!
In northern Germany, travelers can expect some restrictions on train traffic today, November 5, 2025. Deutsche Bahn has temporarily taken the route between Hamburg Central Station and Elmshorn out of service due to urgent repairs to a switch. This construction project has a direct impact on several regional trains that run as scheduled between these two cities.
But what does that actually mean for travelers? The trains on the lines RE 7 (Flensburg/Kiel Hbf – Hamburg Hbf) and RE 70 (Kiel Hbf – Hamburg Hbf) now end or begin in Hamburg-Altona. The stops in Hamburg Hbf and Hamburg Dammtor will be canceled during the disruption. Travelers are therefore urged to alternatively use the S-Bahn to and from Hamburg-Altona and bus line 112 from Hamburg Dammtor. These changes could increase travel time by up to 30 minutes, which could pose an additional challenge, especially for commuters.
Current information and alternatives
For everyone who is affected by the restrictions, there is an easy way to get up-to-date information. On bahn.de or via the DB Navigator app, travelers can always check whether and how their planned trips change. The regional customer dialogue can also be reached on 0431 53440500 to clarify specific questions.
It is advisable for affected travelers to check the travel information on the desired travel date if a notification has been received about an unavailable connection. Unforeseeable events, such as current construction work, can be the reason why the booked train is no longer shown in the timetable. Especially for those who have booked flex price tickets, there is the option of using another connection on the same route.
Punctuality of Deutsche Bahn and future developments
On-time transport is very important to Deutsche Bahn. In 2023, around 64% of long-distance trains were delivered on time, while 36% were over six minutes late. In the DB Regio area, punctuality in the first quarter of this year was between an impressive 92 and 93%. The most common causes of unpunctuality include construction sites, technical malfunctions or problems with control and safety technology. This current construction work is part of Deutsche Bahn's ongoing efforts to improve the infrastructure and thus ensure better punctuality in the long term.
Travelers should be vigilant in their planning, especially today and in the coming days. It's worth following the updates regularly and checking alternative connections in advance. So your next trip to Hamburg or the surrounding area can start in a relaxed manner.
