Construction site chaos in Kiel: road users have to prepare for closures!

The city of Kiel is full of construction sites that not only affect traffic, but are also intended to improve important infrastructure. On June 18, 2025, it will be time to find out more about the various construction sites and their impact on traffic.

Current construction sites in Kiel

A particularly intensive construction project concerns the old Levensau high bridge, which will remain completely closed until Kiel Week. Diversions for vehicle traffic will be routed via the neighboring federal highway 76. Work will also continue on the Eichenbergskamp until June 27, 2025, where repairs to rainwater connection pipes are pending - although pedestrians can pass.

Hasseer Straße will also be completely closed between house numbers 78 and 100 until June 27, 2025. Reconstruction and expansion work is taking place here. And anyone traveling in Kiel-Wik must be prepared for a complete closure of Flensburger Straße until June 30, 2025 - the bicycle route is being expanded here, which will also affect the adjacent streets.

Not to be forgotten is the work on Preetzer Straße in Kiel-Gaarden-Ost, where a unilateral closure was set up until June 30th due to the construction of a branch of the day clinic (ZIP). Wörthstraße in Kiel-Schreventeich will also be closed until the beginning of July 2025. The reason is repairs to dirty water connections.

New mobility concepts

The city of Kiel plans to invest in modern transport infrastructure in the next few years. This becomes clear in the context of the goal of the head of the mobility department, Alke Voß, who demands that all road users be treated equally. “Increasing traffic volumes require safe and comfortable mobility for everyone,” she emphasizes. This also includes projects to convert the right lane of Eckernförder Straße into a bicycle lane as well as a complete barrier-free conversion of the bus stops on Sophienblatt in the next two years.

Particular attention is also being paid to the Alte Lübecker Chaussee, where Deutsche Bahn is renewing railway bridges. There will be a reduction in the bridge height by September 2025, which will be accompanied by digital height control. This controls vehicles over 3.60 meters and thus ensures greater safety on the road. If the height control is triggered, the traffic lights are switched to red and the responsible authorities are informed.

Collaboration for a better future

A look at the central construction sites in the coming months shows that Kiel not only wants to work on existing roads, but also wants to implement new mobility concepts. From July 2025, the Westring between Eckernförder Straße and Gutenbergstraße will be completely renovated. Stresemannplatz is also being redesigned and is intended to improve the quality of stay for pedestrians. Citizens can look forward to an attractive and functional city that will also better meet the needs of cyclists.

Kiel remains an exciting place for all road users. Current and future construction projects promise to sustainably improve mobility and make the city more pleasant for everyone, whether on foot, on two bikes or four tires.
