Construction site chaos in Kiel: where patience is now required!

A lot is currently happening in Kiel, as the city has set out to thoroughly modernize its transport infrastructure. A look at the current construction sites shows that many streets and paths are being planned or renovated. What is particularly interesting is that the city is striving to ensure equal rights for all road users in the future, as Alke Voß, head of the mobility department, emphasizes in a report by the Kiel Magazine.

There are currently several construction sites in Kiel that are causing traffic restrictions. At Eichenbergskamp, for example, work is still being done on two connection pipes for rainwater. Here the road between Langensaal and Heikendorfer Weg must be completely closed, but pedestrians can pass. The road on Haßbergstrasse in Kiel-Russee will also be renovated by June 29, 2025. Traffic is currently not possible there between Rendsburger Landstrasse and house number 22, as is the case Kiel News report.

Planned work and current construction sites

Unilateral closures are also expected on Preetzer Straße in Kiel-Gaarden-Ost until June 30, 2025, where the ZIP day clinic is building a new branch. And Von-der-Goltz-Allee will also be closed for asphalt work from June 30th to July 4th, 2025. Residents have to be prepared for a dead end on Dorotheenstrasse.

Further measures concern Wörthstrasse in Kiel-Schreventeich, which will remain closed until July 4, 2025 while work is being done on the dirty water connections. In the Kiel district of Wik, Flensburger Straße will be completely closed until July 21, 2025 in order to expand the bicycle route.

  • Preetzer Straße: Einseitige Sperrung bis 30. Juni, Neubau ZIP-Zweigstelle.
  • Von-der-Goltz-Allee: Sperrung vom 30. Juni bis 4. Juli, Asphaltarbeiten.

  • Alte Lübecker Chaussee: Teilweise Sperrung, Höhenbeschränkung 3,60 Meter, bis 30. September.

Complications from altitude controls

The Alte Lübecker Chaussee, where Deutsche Bahn is renewing railway bridges, deserves special attention. Partial closures are in effect here and only one lane remains available. Digital height control has been installed to detect oversized vehicles early and ask them to turn if necessary, which can lead to delays at times of high traffic. Traffic signs and LED boards inform drivers about these measures, while KVG, police and the road traffic authority are automatically informed when the height control is triggered.

The planned renovation measures aim to safely cope with the high volume of traffic and at the same time increase Kiel's attractiveness. The city consistently has ambitious projects up its sleeve that represent modern infrastructure so that all road users can get from A to B on an equal and safe basis.

Other key measures include replacing and greening the bus stops at the main train station, the complete renovation of the Westring and the renewal of the road surface at Stresemannplatz, all of which are due from July 2025.

With these construction measures, Kiel shows that they have a good feel for the challenges and are working resolutely on a modern and functioning transport infrastructure. Of course, the city will continue to provide regular information about the progress of the construction sites.
