Construction site chaos in Kiel: Where you get stuck on the roads today!
A lot is happening in Kiel when it comes to construction sites and traffic changes. Today, September 13, 2025, the focus is on several streets, some of which are full and some of which are partially closed. These measures are partly the result of urgent repairs and partly of planned expansions of the infrastructure. An overview of the current construction sites and the associated traffic restrictions is more than necessary.
The Kiel News report on a number of important construction sites. Schauburgerstrasse between Holtenauer Strasse and Knooper Weg is currently closed due to a district heating pipe burst. But Eggerstedtstrasse in the direction of Schuhmacherstrasse is also affected: Here, due to facade work on a corner building, there is a complete closure, which does not leave pedestrians and cyclists unaffected, as the use of the footpath and cycle path is only possible to a limited extent.
Renovation work and the impact on traffic
To this day, Sören Street is completely closed for renovation work between Posadowskystraße and Poppenrade. The period extended from the end of April to probably today. Mettlachstrasse, which is completely closed due to canal work, is also affected. Residents have access here, but pedestrian and bicycle traffic remains unaffected.
Further restrictions have been announced for Klosterstrasse, which will apply from September 15th to 18th and are based on canal work. Diversions are recommended via Große Ziegelstraße and Grabastraße. All road users are warned about Stresemannplatz, as the right lane will remain closed until September 19th and construction work will then follow in two sections from September 19th to 30th. Not only is traffic routing being improved here, but of course the heavily used asphalt surface is also being replaced City of Kiel explained.
Long-term construction projects in view
A number of construction sites will continue until the end of September and beyond. Hebbelstrasse is restricted for work on a water canal until September 24th. The full closure on Feldstrasse will probably be necessary until September 26th due to the connection of the UKSH to a newly laid district heating pipeline. We also expect a complete closure of Woermannstrasse due to civil engineering work until the end of October 2025.
The situation on the roads around Kiel is not just limited to inner-city construction sites. Current traffic reports stau.info confirm that a representative of the construction site plans can also be found on the A215 between Kiel and Neumünster. From today until December 13, 2025, work will be carried out here at the Rumohr rest area, which could result in additional diversions.
Taking all these measures and restrictions into account, it is advisable not only to consult local traffic news, but also to plan alternative routes. Anyone who regularly travels through Kiel should be prepared for longer journey times and remain as flexible as possible.
