Chaos in Kiel: Bomb scares and school strikes characterize the week!
There was a lot going on in Kiel last week. From November 30th to December 5th, 2025, various legitimate events happened in the city that caused both shock moments and positive developments. The state of affairs? Here is an overview of the main events.
The week began with an explosive incident: On Sunday, an aircraft bomb from the Second World War was defused in Kiel-Gaarden. Around 6,900 people had to be evacuated, which proved challenging due to delays in the evacuation. The explosive ordnance disposal service completed the defusal at around 1 p.m., while the evacuation area also included the TKMS area. Thank God everything turned out well, but the shock was deep.
Changes in healthcare
On Monday there was an important personnel decision at the Kiel Municipal Hospital: After 25 years as managing director, Roland Ventzke is handing over management to Nicole Schröder. However, Ventzke will remain in a staff position as authorized representative, which means that the city can continue to draw on his experience. The two have been working together for two years and should complement each other well.
Tuesday brought less than pleasant news: a break-in occurred at a DHL packing station in Kiel-Suchsdorf. 20 of almost 120 compartments were damaged and the perpetrators apparently targeted small and medium compartments. The investigation is already in full swing.
Focus on juvenile crime
Wednesday should cause excitement again. An increase in juvenile crime has been noted. A total of 153 more young people and adolescents were involved in crimes than in the previous year, with theft and physical injuries being the most common crimes. Experts attribute the increase to the catch-up effects of the corona pandemic, which represents a serious problem.
Finally, on Thursday there was some good news: a new transport contract between the country and Deutsche Bahn was launched. The DB Regio will operate the Kiel-Hamburg route until at least December 2039, with new trains starting in December 2027. Positive side effect: The RE7 will drive to Denmark every two hours. This could result in a noticeable improvement in transport offerings.
Youth engagement
The week ended with a school strike on Friday, in which thousands of students demonstrated against the new military service law. This provides for compulsory muster training for young men. The students gathered on the parade ground at 10:30 a.m. and showed that they want to be heard. Another nationwide school strike is already planned for March 5, 2026.
A look into the future shows that there is also a lot to do culturally. On Saturday, December 13th, the play “Snow White” will celebrate its premiere at the Kiel Opera House. Remaining tickets are available on the Kiel Theater website and promise an entertaining evening.
Cultural education for everyone
Cultural education is also being worked on in Kiel. Supported by teacher Hanne Pries and Christine Scheffer from the “KIELER FORUM – network culture & science”, primary school children developed materials to make access to large cultural institutions easier. Every primary school in Kiel receives colorful folders with these materials, which are intended to help the students go through the cultural doors and explore the city's cultural diversity. An important step so that the children can experience the culture in Kiel outside of class.
Overall, the past week in Kiel was an exciting mix of challenges and positive developments that continue to keep the city and its citizens moving. What happens next? That remains to be seen.
