Füchse Berlin fight for a Supercup victory against Kiel in a thrilling drama!

The Füchse Berlin won the Supercup against THW Kiel 34:33 last Saturday, after a nerve-wracking seven-meter throw. This thrilling duel took place in the SAP Garden in front of 10,298 enthusiastic spectators, just five days before the start of the 60th Bundesliga season. Championship flair was in the air as the Füchse entered as the reigning German champions and it was already the second Supercup title in the club's history, having beaten SC Magdeburg the previous year.  Ran.de reports that this match once again tested the nerves of the players.

Berlin dominated the game in the first half and went into the break with a 19:14 lead. Mathias Gidsel was the outstanding player that evening and scored eight goals, making him the top scorer of the game. ZDF.de highlights that the Kiel team held up well until the 14th minute, but after that they only scored a single goal between the 14th and 26th minutes. It only became really exciting in the second half, when Kiel pulled ahead to 27:24 and presented the Füchse with major challenges.

A game of goalkeepers

The goalkeepers became the protagonists of the game. Andreas Wolff from Kiel showed an impressive performance and saved several critical seven meters. Before the break, Dejan Milosavljev from Berlin also shone and kept the Foxes in the game. With the score at 31:31 in the final phase, video evidence was requested of a possible foul by Lukas Herburger against Eric Johansson, but it ended without a penalty.

In the end it remained exciting until the last second. In the seven-meter throw, Lasse Ludwig secured the decisive throw with a parade and sealed the victory for the Foxes. Hard work that paid off because, as Tim Freihöfer noted after the game, it was a real goalkeeper duel. Sportschau.de adds that with this defeat Kiel missed out on their 14th title in Supercup history, after their 25th participation.

The women in focus

The female counterpart, Thüringer HC, also caused a stir by winning 31:10 in the duel against HSG Blomberg-Lippe after initially trailing by nine goals. They came in as replacements for the insolvent defending champion HB Ludwigsburg and showed a strong performance with their impressive final spurt.

In summary, the Supercup was not only an exciting handball game, but also a sign of the strength of German handball. The Füchse Berlin have once again proven that they have nerves of steel and are ready to do well in the coming Bundesliga season.
