HAW Kiel shines: Students win Ernst August Göttsche Prizes!
On November 7, 2025, a very special event was celebrated in Kiel: The Ernst August Göttsche Memorial Foundation honored talented students from the Kiel University of Applied Sciences (HAW Kiel). Innovative works that impress not only with their creativity but also with their practical use were honored in a celebratory ceremony.
The main prize went to Max Senkbeil, who was awarded for his master's thesis entitled “6D pose determination using 2D cameras and artificial intelligence for robotics applications”. His project has the potential to revolutionize e-fuel refueling of ships. Senkbeil developed a real-time system that controls robots that autonomously refuel ships with synthetic fuel. The system dynamically takes the ship's movements into account, which is crucial for the efficiency and safety of refueling. This work is part of the “Fuel-Ship2Ship” research project and impressively shows how powerful modern technologies can be when it comes to sustainable energy sources.
Special recognition for innovative ideas
Jule-Marie Goetzke and Max Borm were also honored for their outstanding research achievements. Goetzke received a recognition award for her master's thesis on securing connected vehicles against cyber attacks. Their research focuses on the development of AI-powered methods for simulating attack scenarios that enable manufacturers to optimize their security systems and thus increase trust in autonomous mobility.
The second recognition award went to Max Borm, who researched the automation of manufacturing processes through the analysis of CAD data in his bachelor's thesis. His innovative approach to tool selection using a graph-based regressor shows how important intelligence and networking are in modern production. This work reflects the strengths and commitment of young engineers who conduct application-related research in Schleswig-Holstein.
The role of the foundation
The Ernst August Göttsche Memorial Foundation plays a central role in this by encouraging lecturers to nominate outstanding bachelor's and master's theses for two years. This is an important contribution to promoting young talent in the engineering field and underlines the importance of HAW Kiel for the region.
In other cross-industry news: The Boeing Company, which has been in business since 1916, is emerging as a heavyweight in the industry. The company, known worldwide for the development and support of aircraft as well as space and defense systems, impresses with its innovative approaches. Analysts rate the stock a “Strong Buy” under the ticker symbol “BA,” indicating a positive market outlook. Its 12-month price target of $240.39 could represent a hefty upside of over 23.65% and shows how high confidence is in the American aviation industry.
Overall, the event at HAW Kiel and the positive guidelines in aviation and defense reflect the spirit of innovation that is common in northern Germany and beyond. An exciting time for everyone who is interested in technology and future issues!
