Magical heaven over Kiel: Hot air balloon rides are a huge hit during the week!

The atmosphere is great and the weather conditions are simply perfect – that is the verdict of chief meteorologist Michael Noll. Am 22. Juni 2025 startete die 19. Internationale Willer Balloon Sail vom Nordmarksportfeld in Kiel. Over 30 pilots, including the experienced Thomas Siebel, floated into the sunny sky in their hot air balloons.

Thomas Siebel, who has had his pilot's license since 1996, has gained a lot of experience on his numerous trips in different countries. This time, however, he welcomes a very special couple: Mila and Malte Wüstenberg from Kiel, who are celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary with a balloon ride. After a long wait due to Corona and unfavorable weather, they are now happy to finally make their dream come true.

An impressive experience

The hot air balloon, which weighs around 700 kg together with the basket and is equipped with three 85 liter gas bottles, takes off gently at around 8:30 p.m. Passengers enjoy the breathtaking view over 40 kilometers of Eckernförde, Raisdorf, Schönberg and the Westensee. The balloons follow the course of the Schwentine and glide majestically over Klausdorf.

Passengers feel a pleasant sense of calm and serenity at an altitude of over 300 meters. As the sun slowly sets, Thomas Siebel is already looking for a suitable landing spot. A mown field is ideal, and the group ultimately lands gently on a stubble field near Flüggendorf. A chase vehicle quickly arrived on site to help with packing up, before Thomas Siebel bought the helpers a cold beer as a thank you.

The big festival of hot air balloons

The Balloon Sail is not only a spectacular balloon ride, but also a comprehensive festival. This year there is one exciting challenge in particular: During construction, visitors can experience concerts by stars such as “Sting” and “Fanta 4”. The event, which has been running since June 20, includes a variety of activities: from model flying and five-a-side tennis to a kids fun park and skydivers flying over the Norder.

The organization has established itself over the last few years and won the Europe-wide tender for the next three years. Live music from artists such as DJ Elvis and “The LineWalkers” provides additional entertainment. A special highlight is the Night Glow, followed by an impressive fireworks display. The balloon ride costs 290 euros per person, and anyone interested can register for the rides at 6 p.m. at the Nordmarksportfeld.

But what do future pilots and passengers need to know about the weather conditions? The safety of hot air balloon rides depends largely on stable weather conditions. Experts from the German Weather Service provide the necessary information on wind speed, precipitation and visibility. Pilots are not allowed to fly during thunderstorms or other unfavorable conditions. It is also recommended to wear sturdy shoes and seasonal casual clothing.

We can only hope that the weather will ensure unforgettable balloon rides in the coming days. There is great anticipation, not only for the breathtaking views, but also for the many activities and concerts that the Balloon Sail has to offer.
