Heaven magic over Kiel: Hot air balloon ride inspires at the week!

The mood is splendid and the weather conditions are just perfect-that is the judgment of chief meteorologist Michael Noll. On June 22, 2025, the 19th International Willer Balloon Sail from the Nordmarksportfeld in Kiel started. Over 30 pilots, including the experienced Thomas Siebel, floated to the sunny sky with their hot air balloons.

Thomas Siebel, who has had his pilot license since 1996, has had a lot of experience on his numerous trips in different countries. This time, however, he welcomes a very special couple: Mila and Malte Wüstenberg from Kiel, who celebrate their tenth wedding day with a balloon trip. After a long waiting time due to corona and unfavorable weather, they are now happy to finally realize the dream.

an impressive experience

The hot air balloon, which weighs around 700 kg together with the basket and is equipped with three gas bottles of 85 liters each, gently lifts off around 8:30 p.m. The passengers enjoy the breathtaking view over 40 kilometers on Eckernförde, Raisdorf, Schönberg and the West Lake. The balloons follow the course of the Schwentine and glide majestically over Klausdorf.

The passengers feel soothing calm and serenity at a height of over 300 meters. While the sun is slowly reducing, Thomas Siebel is already looking for a suitable landing site. A mowned field is optimal, and ultimately the group gently ends up on a stubble field near Flügendorf. A chasing vehicle is quickly on site to support when packing together before Thomas Siebel gives the helpers a cool beer as a thank you.

The big festival of hot air balloons

The Balloon Sail is not only a spectacular balloon trip, but also a comprehensive festival. This year there is an exciting challenge in particular: During the structure, visitors can experience concerts of stars such as "Sting" and "Fanta 4". The event, which has been running since June 20, includes a variety of activities: from model flight and small field tennis to a Kids Fun Park to parachute jumpers that fly over the Norder.

The organization has established itself over the past few years and won the Europe -wide tender for the next three years. Live music of artists such as DJ Elvis and the "The Linewalkers" provides additional entertainment. A special highlight is the Night Glow, followed by an impressive fireworks. But what do the future pilots and passengers need to know about the weather conditions? The safety of hot air balloon rides depends largely on stable weather conditions. Experts from the German Weather Service provide the necessary information on wind speed, precipitation and visibility. Pilots must not carry out any journeys or other unfavorable conditions. It is also recommended to wear solid shoes and seasonal leisure clothes.
