Kiel defeats HSV on penalties and moves into the DFB Cup quarter-finals!

There was a real bang in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup: The NDR reports that Holstein Kiel defeated Hamburger SV 5-3 after a thrilling penalty shootout. Kiel surprisingly moves into the quarter-finals, while HSV is once again left empty-handed. The match ended 1-1 after regular time and extra time, with the decision only being decided on penalties.

The first 90 minutes were characterized by Kiel's solid defense, while HSV was unable to show much creativity offensively. Both teams missed some good opportunities in the first half; Alexander Rössing-Lelesiit failed in the first half and Kieler Harres couldn't get past Hamburg keeper Daniel Peretz in the 26th minute. In the second period, Kiel's offense remained active when Adrian Kapralik hit the post without creating any major chances.

Drama in extra time

Things only got really exciting in extra time. In the 107th minute, Bakery Jatta gave HSV the lead. But Kiel's answer didn't take long to arrive: Phil Harres converted a free kick straight into the equalizer in the 118th minute. “We fought for each other,” said Harres enthusiastically about his team’s team spirit after the game, while HSV looked back disappointed.

The final point was the penalty shootout, where Timon Weiner shone in the Kiel goal and easily parried HSV's decisive penalty. Harres showed nerves of steel and confidently converted the last penalty, which sparked celebrations from Kiel and brought even more frustration to HSV. “We should have shown more,” said Peretz after the final whistle.

The quarterfinals are approaching

The draw for the quarter-finals is already imminent. On Sunday from 7:15 p.m. it will be announced on the ARD sports show who will meet. The men's quarterfinals will take place on February 3, 4, 10 and 11, 2026. Fans can look forward to exciting encounters. Holstein Kiel has the opportunity to continue to surprise, while HSV must concentrate on the next challenge after this failure has become a bitter reality.
