Storm and truants: Schleswig-Holstein in the current news check!

There is currently a lot of movement in Schleswig-Holstein - not only on the playing field, but also in the area of renewable energies. Holstein Kiel were able to enjoy an exciting 1-1 draw against Darmstadt 98 in the 2nd Bundesliga, while coach Marcel Rapp has a good knack for emphasizing the positive sides and still sees room for improvement. SC Weiche Flensburg also suffered a tough 5-3 defeat against SV Meppen in the Regionalliga Nord.

But it's not just the sports results that make headlines. A look at the social challenges shows that the number of truants rose to 2,770 in the first half of 2024/25, which is 500 more than in the previous year. The causes are obvious: psychological stress, family crises, excessive demands at school and a lack of sense of belonging cause problems for the students. Research will be carried out here until 2027 to improve student retention.

The weather and the harvest are celebrating success

The weather is also currently causing problems for the people of Schleswig-Holstein: hurricane-like gusts and rain mean that ferry traffic in North Frisia is restricted and will even be stopped completely on Sunday. While a few trees fell, the damage has so far remained minor. Storm surges on the North Sea are also in the works and could hit the area in the coming days. An expression of regional cohesion, however, is the largest Thanksgiving parade in Northern Germany in Vaale, which boasts over 70 festively decorated floats and marching bands. On Sunday, a nationwide harvest festival will also be celebrated in Wilster, including a church service and a festival mile.

In Barkelsby, however, the fire brigade was called upon: over 100 bales of straw were on fire and an adjacent barn roof was feeling the heat. Fortunately, there were no injuries and 100 calves were saved while the fire department was on duty with four fire engines.

Wind power expansion remains in the fast lane

A particularly positive topic is the expansion of wind power in Schleswig-Holstein. Not only does the region remain a real destination in the renewable sector due to its many wind turbines, it also tops the national list for wind power expansion. In 2024, Schleswig-Holstein approved a total of 204 new wind turbines with a total output of 1.1 gigawatts, as schleswig-holstein.de reports. This performance exceeds all other federal states.

The approval process only takes 18 months on average, while the national average is around 23 months. This means: Schleswig-Holstein has created a good law that promotes the expansion of renewable energies. Last year, a new record of 27.3 terawatt hours (TWh) of green electricity was set, meaning that green electricity generation has more than doubled in the last ten years.

In order to fully exploit the region's future potential, an expansion of power lines is also required to direct green electricity to where it is needed. The new federal government is now called upon to create reliability and planning security for the energy transition. In addition, there are critical comments about the introduction of temporary network congestion areas, which could slow down expansion.

Both the expansion of wind power and the issues surrounding sustainability help Schleswig-Holstein to advance the goal of energy independence and make a valuable contribution to climate protection. The state government has a really good hand here, because the progress not only ensures new electricity, but also long-term prospects with regard to the use of regionally generated green electricity, e.g. for heat pumps and e-mobility, such as stadtwerke-norderstedt.de notes.

Overall, it can be said: Schleswig-Holstein is on the move and shows that it can be at the forefront in many areas - be it sport, education or renewable energies. We will see how developments continue and what challenges the future will bring.
