75 years of fencing in Lübeck: anniversary celebration on the market square!

There is movement in the scene in Lübeck, because the Hanseatic Fencing Club Lübeck e.V. is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The club, founded in 1950, has developed into an integral part of the sports landscape in the Hanseatic city. To mark the anniversary, a celebratory presentation will take place on July 12, 2025 on Lübeck's market square. The event begins at 11 a.m. and Mayor Jan Lindenau will welcome guests with a speech. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the sport of fencing.

The planned festival mile not only offers information about the club and the different types of fencing, but also combat demonstrations, which will also take place throughout the entire campaign period. This means that both interested parties and regular guests will get their money's worth, regardless of whether they have been following the sport of fencing for a long time or are hearing about it for the first time.

A celebration of movement

But that's not all! The following Sunday, July 13, 2025, the 2025 Open Club Championship will take place in the Burgfeldhalle. Participants from all over Northern Germany as well as from Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony are expected here. The competition promises exciting duels and shows that fencing is a sport that combines both tradition and modern forms of competition.

The Hanseatic Fencing Club Lübeck is not only known for its competitions, but also for its diverse range of sports. There is a wide range of sports in Lübeck, ranging from football and handball to judo and karate. This wide range not only promotes fitness, but also social contacts within the community, which plays an important role for the city and its residents. The club brings together sports enthusiasts and people of different age groups.

A long tradition of fencing

Fencing, one of humanity's oldest sports, has an exciting history. Originally practiced as armed combat with long blades and hand protection, it changed over the centuries. With the advent of gunpowder, armored knightly equipment became less important, and sword fighting developed into the modern sport of fencing. The German Fencing Association, which was founded in 1911, has had a decisive influence on the development of the sport in Germany. Fencing has been an integral part of this event since the 1896 Olympic Games, and women have also been active in fencing since 1924.

Fencing played a special role in the post-war period. After the Second World War, the sport was briefly banned by the victorious powers. However, this ban was lifted after four years and helped to revitalize the sport in Germany. Reunification also posed a challenge, which ultimately led to the merger of the two fencing associations in East and West Germany in 1990.

The Hanseatic Fechtclub Lübeck e.V. not only shows how multifaceted this sport is, but also how important community and tradition are in the fencing scene. Be there when the Lübeck fencing community takes the next steps into a new sporting era!
